Has anybody matted a NIssan 5 speed and a NP231???
I have a Rover V8 engine that need to matt to a NP231 with a 5 speed in between.
We have already used the strong NISSAN 5 speed in a CHEVY 6.5 diesel application and has demosntrated itīs strength. ...
We want to use the same unit in a YJ...
Any ideas???

Would need one helluva adapter plate. Nissan tranny's and cases are married, and the tail housing is huge. Plus, you'd need to adapt the shaft.
Why not stick with a Nissan case with Calmini gears? Kinda pricey, but it's bombproof.

The adapter plate wouldnt be that hard, Id worry more about the shaftwork. the 23 spline input of the np231 is 1.22" OD, 23 spline. I think theres a 21 spline version also. the nissan output isnt big enough at the splines to be resplined. Doesnt make it impossible, but sure makes it harder. Is there a problem with a rover 5spd?

Is the NP231 a male input? If so, just make a coupler for the two, and a nice big plate to fit between the two pieces and I'll bet it would work well.

nope, the 231 has a female input.

That makes it a little harder. What about welding an output shaft from something that bolts to a 231 to a coupler that will go onto the Nissan output?

From what Ive read, It seems like welded shafts do pretty good, but not great. Just thinking out loud, but I bet you could have a short shaft built with male nissan splines on one end and the male 23 spline on the other end. But make the nissan splines a healthy press fit into a nissan slip yoke with the yoke cut off. Then pin the two together so they cant work apart over time. Moser and others will cut outside splines pretty cheap, so this wouldnt be that expensive, but a little cobbled together.

We have adapted the NISSAN to a Chevy 6,5 diesel before and the bellhousing can be done by welding aluminium pieces together.
The problem is the output of the NISSAN and the NP231 input...
Maybe we could fit a KLUNE in the middle??

The earlier Nissan's(720 I think), used a divorced t-case. Then you could use any case you want if you made an input for it.

Do it and let us know how it turned out.
This is a GU patrol 5speed right?

The best way would be to get a shop taking the old shaft(s) from the 5-Spd and the original tranny mated to the 231 and let them fab a completely new shaft.
Which Nissan tranny is it you want to mate to the V8 ? We're destroying the 2.8's Patrol trannies like nothing here behind a stock RD28T.

does calmini make gears for a chain drive case?
or IS the case in a 95 truck chain drive?
I have the t case gears and they are in my '99. And yes, there is a chain.

Sorry... not tryin to high jack the thread but I had pretty much the same questions.
I am looking at converting a late 80's jeep cherokee over to a diesel. I have access to a nissan LD28. I was told they bolt dirrect to any of the early Z car transmissions. This one came from a maxima. But I'd like to keep the NP231. I know the NV231 is the same tcase with a different inputshaft. They are the same tcase. And I could use an NP205 which is a divorced tcase. But I would rather like to try and come up with some other solution. Anyway I wanted to add some info as well as ask for help. thanks

Some V6 zxs came with a T5 behind them. Im not sure about the inline 6s. Id check to see what tranny came in the 1983 280zx turbo. If it happens to be a T5, you might be able to mix and match tranny parts with a jeep T5.
