: One step closer FJ60 rear into an FJ40...Q's

Crawlin Cruiser has a line on a 60 rear for me and I need just a little more info before I purchase and dedicate.. I have a 69 FJ which means that I'll have to re drill the pinion flange to fit the smaller pattern of early FJ's ( no problem I have a new late model pinion flange I can re-drill to match driveshaft bolt patterns) I think I'll have to use my stock 4.11 w/locker 3rd member and am wondering if my stock 69 third member will bolt into the housing and inner axles of the FJ60....This seems too easy, I mean all I'm looking at is 2 perches $20, to weld onto the top of the axle and drilling a spare late model pinion flange to match the bolt pattern s of the early FJ's (it's the round after market type so I have room on the flange to redrill the holes) what am I missing?? Jeff said that the rear is easy to match up on perches cuz the rear springs are farther apart than the fronts, fronts are 27 1/4" rears are 32" and he's right, anything else?
is it really this simple??
Thanks, Rick

If I can use my stock 3rd member I won't have to redrill the flange holes of course, thats if it'll fit. I've got a Lockrite powertrax installed in it.

Rick:

Putting the FJ60 under the rear of your 40 will be a snap. As Jeff has said, setting the perches is no big deal. While the axle is out of the rig take time to weld brackets for a traction bar on. The third members are interchangeable, with two caveats. 1) your 67 third member may have 9mm bolts holding it in, and the later 40's and 60's use 10mm. All you have to do is drill the flange holes larger. 2) the early 40's have course spline side gears in the third members - later 40's and 60's have fine spline, so the swap wont work, unless you get the side gears swapped over to fine spline. You know, it just might be worth you getting the FJ60 third re-geared, and put the lockright in. The bonus is a fine spline pinion, which is stronger. Also, dont waste your time and money doing a rear disc conversion on the FJ60 axle - the rear drums work great, they are self adjusting, and have a rear emergency brake that works. I will try and find Steve Tetu's number - I dont know why they dont put it on the web site? Cheers

Thanks for the info Andy, my 3rd member is a 69 but I'll check it for bolt size. This might be a stupid rookie axle swapper question but didn't I replace the side gears with the lockrite flanges and couplers?? if so then it won't be a factor when swapping 3rds. Unless you are talking about the inner axle shaft spline count, but then they would sell 2 different types of lockrites for Cruisers.

A '69 3rd will go into the FJ60 axle just fine, it is fine splined inners as well. the only thing that might not match up is the flange, but you're aware of that already. Yep, it's an easy install for sure.

Sweet!! it will be a hell of a lot easier than the front it's going to compliment. I'll have to cut off the 9mm pitched brake ends and swap in the 10mm's but I'm going to run a mini 7/8" bore master cylinder so the rear drums should be happy. (knock on wood)

Since Rick is on an extended duty exercise Ill answer this for him. There is such a thing in Washington as too wide if you want a multi purpose wheeler that is good for a little of everything. We have some tight trails here and in order to run them easily full width is too wide.

Well I picked up the FJ60 rear axle, scraped the rust off of it, opened it up and found 37 x 10 stamped on the ring gear. Which is ok, because thats what it was advertised as and all I have to do is swap in my 4.11 third member with lockrite. I ground off the old spring perches and ordered a set of Warn 3" (3" X 5 1/2" X 1/4") spring pads. So all thats left now is to get an adapter to plug my 9mm brake end into a 10mm.....any ideas???
will my stock 69 master cylinder have too much pressure for the FJ60 rear drum setup?? two slave cyinders instead of four)I'm thinking about doing the rear before the Hybrid front, but if it's too much of a pain in the ass I'll just wait and do them both at the same time.....in fact it will save some brake fluid.
Macgyver; the benefit of a FJ60 Axle in the rear in my instance is the fact that my Hybrid front end is going to be a few hairs shy of 60" and the stock rear is only 55" So with a FJ60 rear I gain 3" of width, a better emergency brake setup, and a better drum brake setup (2 slave cyinders instead of 4) It's a done deal, all that left to figure out is the brake issues (I have an 83 mini truck 7/8" bore master cylinder with booster sitting in the shed) which I plan to branch down to the chevy discs in the front and run one line for the FJ60 rears.

Are you using the stock t-case? If so do you get rid of the stock E-brake or just gut and leave the drum?

I'm going to leave the stock E-brake drum right where it is, I could gut it but why??

The drum emergency brakes in the FJ60 axle work way better than the parking brake drum ever can - dont waste your time and money converting to discs!!

I would be interested in seeing some pics of how you run your new e-brake cable. If you get a chance, thanks.

Damn, missed ya on the street, we had to get back anyway but I would have liked to have seen how you plumed your brake lines. I use WP's perches the biggest ones they make 3" x 5 1/2" there preety stout and only cost 10 bucks apiece. I should have picked up a 9mm brake fitting from Steve, that way I could have had a hard line made, 9mm to 10mm, now I have to disable my rig to pull one off so I can have a line made when we put the rear end in this Sunday. <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">
