: Help mounting TJ flares
squirrelman83 01-02-2002, 12:41 PM I picked up a set of TJ flares for the Sammy today, and wanted some info on mounting them. I know there are a few guys on here that run them, so I was curious what you used to mount them. I realize I am going to have to do a bunch of "precision cutting" with the sawzall to get the openings right, but after that, I'm kinda stumped. What kind of hardware have you used to attach them? I thought rivets at first, but I don't know if those would work due to size, unless you can find some really big ones! I was thinking you could use a small bolt and nut, but I think it might be hard to get to in some places to tighten it down. Who's done it, and what did you do? I'd also like any info on YJ flares, too, since I'm sure it would be similar. Thanks guys! :) ~Steve
mud-magnet 01-02-2002, 01:29 PM lots of guys on off-road.com's bbs run tj flairs.......... check there if no-one replys here....
M.Martian 01-02-2002, 01:41 PM I know Glenn over at Rocky-Road is running TJ's on at least one of his rigs. I think he was using rivets for his.
squirrelman83 01-02-2002, 01:42 PM Well, Glenn, inquiring minds want to know... :D ~Steve
a friend of mine used the "Christmas Tree" type push through plastic rivets to mount his~~ it works really well cause they'll just knock off if they get hit instead of tearing metal:D :D
jp008 01-02-2002, 09:41 PM Squirrel-I haven't done any cutting on my zuk. I used YJ rear flares on all four corners. I removed the factory flare and then used a drill to get rid of the spot welds. I then used a grinder to smooth it out and remove the rust. I sealed it then primed it and used some black spray paint. I then marked the holes that are in the flares with a punch, drilled them out and used the plastic push style rivets that bb88 mentioned. A little cutting on the flares were needed to get them to fit. (the lip on the inside) and I had to cut about 4" off the front ones so they were not hanging down past the bumper.
Hope this helps. see it here www.jp008.com

squirrelman83 01-02-2002, 11:19 PM Those plastic rivets sound like something to look into. Where did you guys get them from? I am planning on starting tomorrow, and at least get all the sawzall work done. I have already removed the rear passenger flare and metal lip, so at least I know how to do that. Thanks for the link, too, the YJ's look good. Not sure where I would find those plastic rivets, though. Thanks. ~Steve
UZI 9mm 01-03-2002, 08:56 AM i don't know if these are exactly the kind they're talking about, but i got mine at Home Depot actually, in the fastener aisle where they have all the little plastic bins with nuts, bolts assorted plugs, pins, grommets etc.;)
Rocky Road 01-03-2002, 09:01 AM For the stock TJ flares we have on one of our Zuks, I just used pop rivots. I just used a cutting wheel mounted to a grinder to adjust the length. Use a sander of some sort to finish off the look when you cut is done.
For the Bushwacker TJ flares we carry, we provide attachment hardware in the kit.
jp008 01-03-2002, 11:31 AM I got my fasteners at Lowes. <<<<) This is what they look like. I used the 1".

squirrelman83 01-03-2002, 02:48 PM Well, I got the rears installed today. I used standard 1/8" steel rivets. It turned out okay in the rear, but the fronts are too big to fit the Sammy, without doing a lot of cutting. I left the stock flares on the front for now, but I may get some more TJ rears for the front down the road. Thanks for the help, guys. ~Steve

I was going to section the flare to the right size and plastic weld them back together. A little sand paper and some bumper paint and you'd probably never know the difference.

I thought about something like that, but I think it would be pretty hard to make it look good. I would hate to cut a set of front flares in half and realize, gee, that's not going to work afterall. Seems like it'd be a good idea, though. :D ~Steve
