I just looked at a 83 GMC S-15. I know nothing about these trucks. What engine, tranny (I think it is an auto) and transfer case does it have? I noticed the front has IFS what axle is in the rear? If I go pick it up I will scrap the front end and cut off the bed.
Is there somewhere I can get the info from the vin number? Thanks for the help, Bob

If it's an auto then it's a 700r4 the motor would either be a 4 banger or a 2.8 v6 at the most ( a very gutless engine). I think that the tcase is a NP231 but I could be wrong. The rear end would be a 7.5" 10 bolt.
Check inside the glovebox of the truck and see if there is still a sticker in there with all the factory codes on it. I know that there is a site that will tell you what all the codes mean but can't find it right now

The truck does have a 2.8 also a five speed. No sticker in the glove box though. Bob

if it's an auto, it's a 700R4, if it's a 5 speed, it should be a T5. the transfer case is a NP207, unless it's got the 4.3L, if it's got a 4.3, it's a NP231 (floor shifter) or a NP233 (electronic shift). the rear end is a 7.5" 10 bolt (26 spline i think), the 4.3 equipped trucks got a 7.625" 10 bolt (28 spline i think). i belive the front end is the 7.2" IFS. there are lockers available for both front and rear (okay, maybe only one for the front, i belive powertrax makes it...). any other questions?

Out in CA, an '83 s-truck might be worth something more than scrap, not the case here in the rustbelt.... 20 yr old POS w/ whatever miles means free or close to it.
Scrap the front, while you can. Cut off the bed only if it's in the way (and sell to stupid people like me, with rust.)
'83 means no 4.3. Per previous comment it's either a POS version of the T5 or the even more POS Isuzu tranny, but I think that was only a 4 speed. You, sir, are stuck with a crappy driveline if you keep it stock. I ate a few of the smaller-engine rated T5s behind a tired 2.5 4 banger, fwiw.
Going with ruff_ryda on everything else.
I have [2] of these damnable things. Solid trucks, just swap out everything but the motor, and that too if it's a 4 or 2.8, and you're getting somewhere.
It's almost Jeep Zen. :flipoff2:
