: Trailer Fenders

So I guess the law says I have to put fenders on my trailer. The only problem is that my truck it too wide to fit through the fenders.

Has anyone done anything to get around this? Built fenders that you can drive over, or made removable ones. Im looking for a quick idea.

Thanks,

Chris

i saw a cheap/easy way to do that today. the guy just took 3" angle and ran it on top of the fenders and welded it to the trailer bed. that way he just drives over the fenders no problem. and he was running 44" s/s on a blazer chassie/buggy. mike

do removable fenders... if you have no fenders now it will be easy. removable fenders are sweet when you have a dead rig to put up on the trailer, because it's one less thing it has to go over and makes it much easier.

My friend made his fenders removable when he built his trailer, it kicks ass. I will be modifying my trailer to have removable fenders too.

Take a look at a Uhaul car hauler. They have a great setup with fenders that tilt outward. Just the ticket.

The "tip-out" uhaul fenders work pretty good. but the fenders
have to be fairly light.

The "removable" theory is ok too. but still you'll want them to be
light as well, then be carefull where you set they down, don't
stand on them, etc.

I like the 3x3" angle support-ed theory. make them out of 1/8
diamond plate, then support the inner-edge over the top with
3x3 angle. pretty much bullet proof..

as far as getting a "dead" vehicle over them, you'd most likely
still have to drag it over the tires anyway, so what's the difference
over dragging it over fenders instead of tires. Got Winch?

Ant made "roll-bar" (tube) fender covers for his trailer. I haven't seen it, but it worked for him..

I have an 18' x 83" 10K equiptment hauler type trailer. It came with the HD type diamond plate fenders, no problems driving over them so far. My front is ~89" wide, I just take the driver's front tire over the fender. If you are starting from scratch, though, I'd make them removable. Even if its a pain to take them off and you usually go over, I think it would be worth it ir the rig is dead. You could also haul a car on the trailer and not have to climb out the window.

I'm constantly breaking the fenders off my trailer.. even when I go through the hassle of changing tires to some stock 235/75-15s so the full width front will just squeeze between 'em.

I think I'm going to build something out of some relatively light weight box tubing and call it good.

1x1x1/8 is probably too light.. maybe 1.5x1.5x1/8"? One piece front and rear of the tires, through the frame side rail.. two pieces per end welded to that and angled up over the tires, then two more lengths set flat over the two tires to make a big trapezoid.

Add some diamond plate and call it good.

I'm also thinking of fabbing something simlar, but making it drop down through the deck and it'll sit between the fenders.

Thus, instead of having to be careful to get just right over the inner edge of the fenders, I'll have "ramps" in the middle of the deck so the whole tire can sit on the "trapezoid" and not just the edges.

Make it removable so I can still get my cars on the deck, between the fenders, too.

'Course, I also want to widen the deck to match the fenders so I don't have to be so careful getting on n' off.

Trailer fits a stock axled Scout II just fine.. but not when you go n' swap out for full width. :D
