Ok here is the new plan for me, I just dropped the oil in my Ranger (third oil change in it's one year life) and got metal in the oil:mad: !! I take care of my stuff, why is a bearing going out in only a year of use?? So the next step is to go to a Toybox, it is real close to the same size(length) as the Ranger so no drive line mods (I hope) and then swap my R&P gears to 3.73 , this way I will have good highway gears and have a 130:1 crawl!
Also I will be going to a split case, it's stronger and quiet.
So do you think that a Toybox can handle a 5500lb Cruiser? Or will I have to mess with this in a year as well?

I say go for it. the Ty box should be fine, people beatthe crap out of rigs with the Toy T-cases and the only upgrade people seem to need is the 23 spline deal...
I HATED my Ranger OD, it was sloppy, noisy and cost way to much. The Toy box and split case would be much better...

Fine metal or curly shavings? With the straight cut gears you will get some fine metal particles. I don't think the Ranger is very precisely machined. I had problems with mine too. Lost a bearing up front. I have a used front 3.70 ring and pinion you can have. Just remind me to bring it to you.

Cool I want it !(R&P) It was fine almost like dust(floating in the oil) till you dumped the pan then you could see some small flakes on the bottom of the black plastic drain pan. It really bakes my noodle:mad: If Im going to have to change bearings every other year why have it?

TOybox can handle it fer sure..
I"ve got a toybox behind a 350 in an FJ62 running a split case and 35" tires..
WHat engine and tranny combo will dictate what front half of the toybox you run.
Call Marlin, get er ordered.. Wheeling season is almost here.

Who knows without opening it up what is bad in it. It could be just the gears wearing (as per Eric) or somthing, but I'm kinda liking the idea of 130:1 and having regular 60:1 as well. I think I'll upgrade to the Toybox and then tear into the splitter, fix it and sell it off.

I feel I should correct the age of the Splitter I think its about a year and a half(memory is not what it used to be, but still it should not be leaving metal in the oil! ) but it looks like I already got a buyer for the whole assembly(Splitter/SM420/Spaceghost adapter/soft 3sp case):D. Heck can't beat that! I'm still in the "hard thinking " stage and my stuff is already almost sold!

You could send a fluid/metal sample in for analysis to find out if it was gears, bearings, or even the housing. Cat does this in Boise. Also losing the Ranger isn't going to help your weight problem. It weighs like 70 lbs or something.

Yeah I was kidding about the diet:D, that's why I bought a Fullfloat rearend , to handle the weight.
