I've got a '93 2.5 YJ. The starter is beginning to go bad (making grinding noises after start) and I'm looking for an upgrade/replacement.

Any information that can be provided will be greatly appreciated.

The exact same thing has happened to my starter as well, but to date your the only other person I've heard of having the same prob (on a 4cyl as well).

Anyone have any experience with Mean Greeen stuff?

And for those that will say replace it with a V-8, no problem! Just send me a check! :D

I was looking into Mean Green until I saw this post and got a little scared.

If this is true of their alternators, how do their starters hold up?

CrawlinTJ, are you still having problems with your starter?
How long have you had them (or did you have them)?

Interwest Rebuilders, UT.

I was on my way to Moab and my starter started F'n up. I stopped at every autoparts store I could find along ther route. Finally, the starter gave out in NV (started in Los Angeles). Well, I push started it, made it just inside UT, and stumbled across Interwest. I told them my delima, they said "no prob!" I left them the Keys, and walked over to the Dennys, or what ever it was (Dennys Knock off).

When I went back about an hour later, they had pulled the starter, tore it apart, and were rebuilding it. They were done in about another 15 minutes, and they reinstalled in, in the parking lot.

All said and done, it was about $115+-, and it has never started better!

What else would you expect from a shop that only rebiulds starters and altanators?

I've lost track of the number of starters my 93 4 banger has killed. I have 2 starters with lifetime warrantees on them, keep one as a spare, just swap and go. Not sure why the 4 banger is so hard on em, think I usually get about 9 months to a year out of one depending on how much mud I get into.

I've got the org. starter that's been in use for about 1.5 years. It's been having the same problem for a few weeks now (but I don't drive it every day).

Who sells them with a lifetime warranty? That would be good if this is a continuing problem.

What I don't understand is my gf's TJ is over a year old, and she is hard on starters, from constantly stalling on the rocks...yet her's is fine. Must be that jeep-girl thing!

I think that Paul Nasvik runs the mean green starter on his 4 banger. He's not around much lately with his new ski patrol job, but you could email him to ask about it.

a buddy of mine has a 94 Yj 4 banger and he has blown through about 6 of them in the past few years. he went down to advanced auto parts and got a replacement starter with a lifetime warrenty. well he has used that warrenty every 6 months. anybody know why the 4 bangers have co many starter issues? his starter is going again and we will probably change it in a week or two.

Mine crapped on me in my YJ, and I just took it to a place that rebuilt it for $60 or so....Was good as new when they were done with it.
