I have heard the 404's don't like high speed hwy for long distance.
Do the 406 axles have that same issue?

Well actually the 404's wheel bearings are actually larger overall then the 406.....just a note

The main problem with higher speeds in a 404 are with the transmission. Bushings instead of bearings and splash lube with inadequate passages. The tranny in the 406/416 is much better.

Do the 406's have disc brakes?
I know on the 404's the drum brakes tend to keep the heat in causing problems with the portals. The disc brake kit gets rid of that. Daniel at Killeraxles says he would drive is 404 axled chev around 95mph with no problem.

Not all 406's had disc. It was an option on them.

Are you sure that Daniel didn't mean 95Kph? :flipoff2:

the 406 and 416's have the option for disc, but they are hard to find and expensive

Much of this is all covered in the upcoming 406 and later models page.... (http://members.rogers.com/nharrison314/406%20pages/unimog_406_and_later_axle_info.htm)

I think so, I plan on trying it a couple times in mine, We'll see if that old 6.2 of mine will handle 4000 rpm. I think the governer is set at 3800 rpm.
