i was wondering if anyone had taken the engine , tranny and tcase out of a mid nineties tlc and put it into a fj40. just trying to get an idea to see if it would work as v-8 swap. are the new cruisers solid front axle or independent. thanx

all cruisers are solid axle...from what i know. also, the reason i would think people dont swap 80 series shit is lack of availabiltiy. id like to have some of those 62" wide axles from em too...but where the hell am i gonna find a wrecked one? i dunno..just logic is all im talkin from....peace

Every wrecking yard that I've seen (Spokane & Portland areas) take the engine/tranny out right when it gets there and you'd have to pay a pretty penny for them.
You'd be better off finding a whole donor vehicle (insurance auction?).

Isn't that what McMillen did when he built that custom FJ45 wagon thingy a couple of years ago?

Couple of things.....

1998+ Cruisers are V8 and independant suspension. The guys at TLC have built a Banderante with this drivetrain and when asked, he said he would only do this as a complete swap as nothing would easily bolt to the Toyota V8.

I would install the 1FZE (93-97) TLC drivetrain into a '40 in a heartbeat. THe 1FZE is a great engine as are the 63.5" axles on the FZJ-80.

Finally this Retro FJ-45 thing that Millen made was with a Toyota V8, yes, but it was a 300,000 dollar truck

I sent this 97 80 series Oz 1HZ diesel to a guy thats putting it in a 40.

He'll probably want to kill me for this but he's his page on the swap so far.

The 1HZ has been done before, i was considering a 1HD-T but the cost was somewhere over $6000 for the engine alone

the 1HZ swap was into a BJ40 or BJ42 by Duncan at:

www.macquarie4x4.com.au

macquarrie 4x4 i think it is in Sydney

i would love to do a 1HDT swap into mine :(

1HD-T in a 4X series, your looking at him
(1966 J45 wagon).

Problem with 80 series (besides finding it) is no manual tranny, does not have part time t-case, no free hubs, rear steer front axle, and has ABS.

Marks in AU makes a part time conversion for t-case plus hubs.

still stuck with ABS and no manual tranny.

no gear sets available

have to work with rear steer arms.

...and wide wide axle, a downside.

7X series is almost a perfect match for a 40 series and has the manual tranny.

Marks4WD kit is only for the non-ABS transfer case though (US 1991-92) . So you have to get a different transfer if you want to run part-time 4WD with the US model 1FZ-FE.
