What rear axle? If it's a 35C, get a spare :flipoff2:

You took the words out of my mouth! I'll be honest with you don't go beyond 31" tires or your axles will snap when they meet rock!

thats bullshit, while those axles do suck, they will hold up to some abuse on 33s.

Yeah, if running over a curb at the mall is "abusing" them! :flipoff2:

While I wouldn't suggest tackling the Hammers with one, I ran a 35C with lockers and 33" tires for years, and I wasn't easy on it. It did end up blowing up the Lock-Rite twice and I tossed it for a 44 and then a 60.

I ran the hammers in my YJ for several years with both front and rear stock axles and 33" SX.
The rear had a detroit and the front had an ARB.
I broke 2 rear axle shafts and 3 front U joint/shafts durring that time.
As soon as I went to 35" tires, I could not keep the axles alive for more than about 1hr at a time without rerpairs/replacement.
So as much as I would be the first one to say, do not waste money building a D35, thye can in reality handle 33" tires with a reasonable amount of reliability.

I would say figure out what you want to do with it then lift it first and get some spare 35 shafts

( I am a newbie and have not been on the trail long and your statement is true this is the most common prob.it seemsfor the Toys.) With the 30's can you just bring one shaft for both sides? I'll prob. get flamed for sure for this one.:D but hopefully good question.

find someone who's upgrading axles, and get their shafts. I'll bet you can get them for free. Weld the spiders, and go to town. Do everything else, and when you get sick of changing axles (I haven't broke one yet on 33's) go to a D44....that's my plan at least. on a D30 you cannot bring one shaft for both sides...think about it, you need the disco inner and outer shaft, and the short side shaft on the driver's side (you do know the diff is offset, right?). in the rear one shaft is fine for either side....but I ALWAYS carry two.

BTW, toyota boys:

check out the Ih8mud.com site, as I recall a dude was upgrading birfields for like $60 a pair. you just had to ship him yours. he was calling em smurfields? and I'm much happier with my xj than my fj60.

Yeah, even birfields break sometimes, but not as often as other
axles. Some drivers switch to larger, beefier axles (60'S), and break those. Could it the driver ? :D :D

You'll break them by :
- driving like an idiot - or
- playing on the extreme stuff (the box, soup bowl, etc)

Drive sensibly and birfields will last a long time. I've yet to break
one in 8 years of wheeling (but I always carry a spare ).

Don't do any jumping, and don't apply too much power with
the wheels turned sharply.

If you want to play in the bowl, or the box, and show off to the
drunken morons that hang out there, then bring spares, and plan
on spending most of your weekend up to your armpits in grease.

Just my .02 worth. :D

Run what ya brung. If you break it you know it's time to upgrade or stop doing stupid things. You can break anything. I still run the stock Corprate 20 rear 2 piece axles in my CJ-5 with a SB Chevy and SM420 and 35" tires. I just don't drive with the skinny pedal. I let the gears do the work. Good luck to ya.

*edit Carrying extra axle shafts is just a good thing to do anyway. Get some spare U-Joints and spare yokes for your axles and front/rear output shafts. If a joint lets go about 50% of the time it takes out a yoke. Just my experience.

common breaks:

rear main
rear driveshaft - if you're running 33's
water pump likes to go out
(basically whole cooling system)
motor mounts
u-joints like a mo-fo

things to watch out for:
popping in front end when turning - track bar, tie rod, steering box.
DW - obvious reasons, no 2 rigs are the same.

i cant think of anythign else right now.
