All the ones I've bought were like 40 bucks each. They were Timkens and I got them at Autozone.

By the way everyone, what is the best way to preserve the bearings back there???

I guess just not go in the mud, apparently that is hell on them...

IS there anything one could do to really make them last a long time?

Thanks...

I imagine it would probably be a good idea to check the outer rubber O-ring, and the inner axle seal whenever you're doing anything with the rear brakes.

Anytime you get into the rear brakes, you're not much farther from checking the CHEAP axle seals.......

I find the main thing that damages rear bearings is mud and the main reason is the outer bearing seal has worn a groove in the axle.
Over here in AUS we have a fix its called a speedy sleeve which is a very thin stainless sleeve that slides over the axle and the new seal runs on this instead of the axle it seams to make them last heaps longer.
It should be available from your local bearing supplies and comes with an installation tool i pay approx $22aus for them.;)

These bearings are tough and toyota over-engineers everything - that's why they cost so much. However, Advance Auto (here in Al) has the bearing kit for about $48 - just bought one a few weeks ago for the disc brake conversion. Seals were about $14 IIRC. The bearing kit has the bearing and the locking collar, but not the snap ring which should also be replaced.

As far as pressing them, I did it in the Army autocraft shop - cost me $5 for use of the 25 ton press. If you are student at AU, there are lots of shops there on campus. When I was in ChE dept, they had one in the basement of Ross Hall for grad students projects. Look around, talk to some ME students.
