Ok, I've got a 40 with stock gauges, but the temp gauge doesn't register. Tested the gauge, applied 12v to it and it pegs the gauge. So it must be the sender.
I'm running a chev 350 and I guess a chevy sender, but it doesn't seem to register the correct ohm reading as the Toyota manual says it should.
Question: Will the Toyota sender fit in the Chevy block?
Surely someone has encountered this before.

my oil and temp sender are the original from the 2F with a Downey adapter for the V8 conversion, so...yes.

If you want it to work correctly order the Downey adapter and use the stock sending units. it is the only way to get it to work.

I *think* the stock toyota sender bushing will work for installing it in the GM block. Last time I did this I compared the Toyota bushing(in the head where the sender screws into) and sender to the one I bought from AA(1/2" NPT) and they are almost exactly the same. Might try it before buying the adapter... also, late model GM heads (87? and later)have a smaller 3/8 npt bushing, so that wont work.
you need the toyota senders for the toyota gauges to get them to work... Napa carries both the temp and oil press senders new for a faily reasonable cost if you need new. When asking for either, make sure you specify the truck has "gauges", not "warning lights", as their computers offer the choice for either...
Dont apply 12V to the gauges on an FJ40 or other FJ. there is a voltage regulator that is part of the fuel gauge that supplies 5V to the coolant temp gauge and the oil pressure gauge(check the back of the cluster on post '72 Fj40's and you will see the voltage supply for the oil/temp gauges comes from the fuel gauge.) Sending 12V to test them is a surefire way to ruin the gauge.

The Downey adapter is SAE on the outside thread to match the intake threads and metric on the inside to match the sending unit threads, Same thing with the Temperature sender.

Not sure on that. The oil pressure sender is 1/8" BSPT, I believe, which will for the most part screw into 1/8" NPT without too much hassle.

The toyota sender does not screw directly into the head, but into a sleeve. The O.D. on the sleeve is 1/2 in pipe thread. Absolutely does fit into chevy manifolds NO ADAPTERS NEEDED! Conversely, I have put a 1/2 pipe T on my Toy head to run a mechanical guage alongside the Toy guage. Hth Mark in CA

That is what I was trying to elaborate, but did not do it well.
Anyway, oil pressure sender will *fit* into 1/8"NPT brass extensions/elbows from Home Depot or other hardware store, so no need for adapters, although technically BSPT 1/8" threads have 27tpi, where as NPT has 28tpi and the pitch is ever so slightly different, but it will work and I have not noticed buggered threads or anything like that.
As for the temp sender "sleeve", that is what I meant by the bushing in the toyota head. It comes out of the head, and fits the 1/2" npt holes in the GM heads or intake and some thermostat housings... No need for the ~$10 AA or downey "bushing"-infact I think it is the OEM Toyota temperature sender bushing they trick you into buying again(even though you have it already on the engine witht the temp sender)

Actually it would depend upon which Chevy manifolds too, some of the newer ones the Toyota sender will bolt in. I used my stock Toyota Temp sensor from my 10/85 FJ60 in my 89 TBI Chevy manifold without using the adapter. I still have the adapter somewhere that I purchased. I believe the adapter will allow you to mount it in the Chevy head. This wasn't a concern for me as I used a mechanical gauge in the head and put the Toyota sensor in the manifold. You cannot run a T for temp gauges as it needs flow passing through the tip of the senosr. I ran a T which you can do for oil pressure with the stock Toyota oil sender and the mechanical sender for the mechanical gauge.
