Just curious, but what do you guys get for mileage with a carbed 350 chevy? Hopefully, (someday) the truck will have a basically stock 350, sm420 , 4:88's and 36's (Yeah, I know...too small. )
Just trying to figure out about what it will get.

Can't be any worse than the f motor/3spd/33" swampers.

I'm getting about 14 with my rig. 327 + .030, TH350 trans, 4.10 with 31-10.5/15. BUT, there's more to life than gas mileage. I'm much happier with the power when I want it. It ran much better when I had a TBI on it (before it quit......aftermarket system that was no longer produced). Put the Edelbrock performer carb (Carter) on it. Has the Edelbrock performer cam and manifold also.

I get around 10-11mpg around town in my FJ40 with built 350 (carbed), SM420, 4.11's and 35" SSR's. If I use the Ranger OD, I can squeek an extra 1 or 2 mpg, but it's a noisy box!!

Not what you asked, but count your blessings. I get between 6-9mpg with my 2F.

It SUCKS gas.

Talk to me when you are pushing your new 36" swampers with the 2F....and 4:11's.

I *love* the honest answers on this forum. If you'd asked this on the LCML you'd get the standard "I get 25 MPG with my stock FJ60", "I get 20 MPG on my de-smogged 2F with 33's" and other assorted BULLSHIT...very tiresome.

I don't want to hear mileage claims from FJ40's with 28" tires driven at the same speed as an Amish buggy, I want REAL WORLD mileage claims with big tires and tired engines!:flipoff2:

Land Cruisers have the aerodynamics of a brick, so high claims of mileage (driven at real speeds, of course) are ludicrous.

My personal favorite are claims of super high mileage from diesel-powered Land Cruisers. Sure, they get higher mileage than petrol Cruisers, no doubt, but I'm tired of people claiming 30+ MPG's out of tired 3B's moving big tires. None of the diesel Land Cruisers I've ever driven get even close to that, and without a turbo, 3B's are gutless. If you want to move that truck, you're going to have to push that engine, and the mileage will drop.

It's nice not to be insulted! :smokin:

Hey Henry
I get 25 MPG out of my stock F motor which is missing a spark plug and has over 400K miles on it! So Pttthh! :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Ross
(Who actually gets about 9 MPG out of his 2F 40, and about 12 MPG out of his 3F 80)

I've driven your FJ40...at one point, under acceleration, I thought the fuel mileage needle was the tachometer dropping! :) :) :)

I run a TBI 350, SM420, 4.10, 35" Muds, with a heavy foot and usually get 10 to 12 mpg in the city
I've burned off a tank of fuel in 1.5 hours doing 85 to 90 mph (on the hwy) and got 3.5 hours (on the Hwy) with my co-pilot driving approx 55 to 60 mph on the same trip.
So driving habits and hills make a big difference.

I take it thats not in US gallons? I forget exactly what the conversion is but I think us gallons are about 15% larger than canadian

In my Fj60 w/ TBI350 & 700r4 w/ lockup I get about 11-13 in town & 12-15 on the highway.
In my stock fj60 on 35's w/ 3.70's I get 10-12 in town & about 13 on the highway.

60 guy,
you're right there's a difference, I'm not sure what it is off hand though.
My calculations are in Canadian gallons.

jeez I get horrible mileage incomparision: I have a 40 with a 327 SBC SM420 4:56 R&P BFG 35 tires and I get 9 -12 MPG on the highway, and thats with holley ProInjection 2 Barrel. I usually drive between 70 - 80 this is means the engine turns 3200 - 3600.
The best mileage I got was 20 MPG with the pro injection and 33" BFG and 4.10 gears. I got it on one trip to DUSY going up US 99 and the following winter I went to the 35" BFG. I must have had one hell of a tail wind that day, the following winter i went with to the 35" and 4.56 R&P and have never got close to that number since

Head winds and tail winds make a huge difference
One place I go camping on a regular basis is about 45 mins. of Hwy driving away. My fuel bill for topping up at the trail head is usually 13 to 15 dollars, one trip was $23. I thought I was driving a stock 6 again with the head wind I was hitting.

OLD 305 w/ quadrajet, 4.10s and 35s = 12-14mpg
(I was getting 11 mpg with the carter carb)

PS. The best I ever got was 16mpg on the freeway. (I never opened up the secondaries on this trip and this was with a newly rebuilt quadrajet, a new cap and rotor, spark plugs, and a new high out put coil and the top was on).

I was squeezing 13-15mpgs with the 292 and points- but i just did the GM HEI conversion and by the seat of the pants it must be doing better cuz i was able to lean out the carb even more and still keep it idlin.

my bone stock 86fj 60 gets in the 13/14 mpg range, i don't think it would drop a bit if i went to a tbi350.. more than likly go up 1 or 2 mike
