: Toyota Axles For a Jeep Q

Just a Question, I own a 1987 Jeep Wrangler, Locked and slightly lifted (3.5") I run 32 bfg muds. Here is my Plan I was going to get big axles like maybe a 60 rear and a 44 front, but I want to run maybe a 33 inch tire, keep the jeep kind of low to the ground trim some more fenders, trim the rockers off at a 45 degree angle. All is well but when it came to axle choices I was doing alot of reading and like the Idea of the clearance issues of Toyota axles and the stronger 6 lug bolt pattern, and the fact that I would not have to pay the price of having some full width axles cut down. So here is my question what is the relative strength of say a mid 80's toyota rearend and front end to say a Dana 44. My jeep runs the 4.2L Inline 6, The idea was sparked when reading about tough truck and Grady Mcleod's WIlly's was running a Toyota Rearend. Do not quote me on the Name. But he runs big tires an over built chevy 350. So there must be some strength, at least more than my Dana 35 non C-Clip and Dana 30

Would appreciate any information.

Toyota rear axles are strong. Never hear to often about them breaking. Strenth wise they are compared to the D44, and have more clearance as well. 86-95 IFS rears (58" WMS-WMS) are 3" wider than pre-86 but use the same 8" 3rd member. Tacoma's run either a 8.4" ring and pinion or if it was a TRD, it has a 8" rear with an electric locker. They are 3"~ wider than the 86-95 IFS versions.

I agree with Bones and will also add that my buddy runs an '85 front axle, and is using a V6 rear from a '92 (I think). He is also using electric lockers front and rear and is running a 304 mated to a t-18(??) and dana 300. He went through 2 D44's in the rear and then decided to use the Toy stuff. So far he has been runnig this set-up for around 4 years and no problems. Oh, and all this on a CJ-5. :D I say go for it!!!!

How do you make a Jeep unstoppable? You add Toy parts :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Good idea but the YJs have the tcase output on the wrong side. You could swap to a dana 300 tcase and use the front from a Toy and swap out two pieces of crap at the same time.

Sorry to correct ya Bones, but......Erik B found out that Tacoma rears are not 3" wider then 86=95's..

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Toyota Rear Axle Widths:
55" wide, '79-85 trucks/4runners
58.5" wide, '86-95 trucks/4runners
60" wide, '95.5-up Tacomas/4runners
66" wide, '93-98 T100 trucks

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Stock Toyota front axle measurements for comparison:
55.5" wide, 29" spring perch centers, '79-85 Toyota trucks and 4runners
63.5" wide, (set up for coil springs) 90-97 FJ80 and FZJ80 Landcruisers
'86-95 IFS front end is about 58.5" wide
'93-98 T100 IFS front end is about 65" wide

But I got a model 18, which meant offset rear so I put a cruiser rear and a toy front - the trick setup for your jeep is a the HP 44 from a late 70's ford. High pinion and bolt on :)

Not sure what the width of the wide track jeep stuff is but I think it is a tad wider than toy so you would be loosing width too..

Front end of a toy is only 55" so keep that in mind..

Hey Oops weld me an arm so I can drive my jeep :D
