I am curious about the newer 4Runners - are they buildable? I have heard from on of the 4x4 Shops that they are built on a Camry chasis. If thats the case, I'm sure it's not worth building.

What says the POR BBS?

I'm still searching for a new(er) truck...........

Anything is buildable, just depends how much money you want to spend. Would I do it-No! Why, to heavy, rear supension sucks, to much glass to break. :usa:

'96+ 4Runner are NOT built on a Camry chassis! They are built on a modified Tacoma chassis. It's not quite as strong as '95 and older, but still pretty good, and very good for a modern vehicle.

The Taco drivetrain is just starting to be modified by many people, so you'll have a little harder time finding parts and advice, but they are available. Also, '98+ 4Runners have a bunch of different transfer cases, ABS, traction control, etc etc. Plan on adapters and possibly replacing tranny and transfer.

If you get one, make sure to get the 3.4 V6!

If you are getting one for building up, get a '95 or older. They are the same frame and drivetrain as pickups '86-'95. My '95 4Runner is almost exactly the same mechanically as my '88 Pickup.

sell it and by an older 4runner. youll have enough $$ to completely dial it up for rockcrawling and have several thousands left over to spend on trips all over the country to various trails!!!!:D :D :D

Check out my old 96 that I sold to build up my 85. They're buildable especially if you can fab, but not worth it if you're into running harder than 4 to 4.5 rated trails. Too much money and sheetmetal, unless you don't care about resale. Give them a couple years and there'll be a ton of them available for around $10k and the market will get bigger.
They're pretty easy to SAS although I haven't seen one yet. It's easier to SAS one rather than dump $2k into a traildisaster 6" front kit and custom rear setup. Waggy Dana 44 up front, toy PS box, etc.
Anyway, the old site if they it isn't exceeding the bandwidth for the day is www.pmurf1.homestead.com.
