i have had a set of 38.5x14.5 sxs in the shed for over a month and finally got a set of rims. spent three hours tig welding them up last night. so i get to mount some tires tonight. cant wait to get them own. they ended up being about 11.5 wide which is just fine for me.

i welded the first two up with silicon bronze by accident. i talked with a buddie of mine and he said that stuff will hold. it sure pissed me off last night. i knew there was some reason it was dirty when i welded it. thought i just didnt get the powder coat off good enough. then i wire brushed the first two and found out. went back to the rod holded and found the silicon bronze laying on the mild steel rod. i sure was pissed, but he said that stuff will strech long before it breaks. so it looks like i got lucky, i was sure dreading grinding the bead locks off. just pissed at my self for not catching it. mike

cut them out here at work, used 3/16 cold rolled steel. 36 8m/m bolts and press nuts. i will see how they hold up in a week or two. i am in a grand total of 171.00 bucks in all a 4 rims and locks so far. i am a cheap ass bastard. mike

got any pics without the locking ring??

Everyone always shows them assembled, but I've never seen the inner ring you welded to the rim... Got any design specs for the inner??

Is the outer ring just flat plate, or does it have a ridge to hold the tire/lock to the rim??

the third pic is with out the locking ring.. the out side rings are just flat plate.

FAWKING SWEET! Looks like I will have to build me a set. Gotta call my father in law and see who's working at the shop this weekend. Too fawking cool.

I see you even sprang for some new wheels too.... :D

Where did you get your pressnuts at?

i found a bag of 8 m/m press nuts here at work that we a left over from a job. so i just used them. i sure love that laser it cut them out in about 7 minutes each. with all 36 holes. we get most of our hardware from aamco supply.

hmm.... OK, I see it.

Forgive the questions but...

Did you cut the outer rim off the original wheel, or ust weld it right to it, making the wheel wider??

So now you have to get the inner bead of the tire over the new bead lock set up, then over to seat up on the original inner rim surface. Then you will take the outer tire bead and just sadwich it between the two rims you made... cool.

Have you made any consideration as to balance? Or do you care? At these for streat use at all, or purley off-road.?

And last question, how did you center them for welding? Just line them up and go, or some sort of jig?

thanks, looks sweet, wish I still worked at my old fab job :(

1 i welded it roght to the out side of the rim. these are copys of rock stompers, i saw his design and said i can do that.
2 they will be on a street legal rig but no daily driver duty. i have not heard of anyone getting tickets in texas for locks.
3 i just centered them of the rims and welded them on. i thought about balancing the rims and just add some weld till i got them all running smooth. but then i think i really don't care, i'm not going to balance the 38.5 sxs. i will just wait and see.

Is there anything that centers the tire in the lock? If not, how do you center the tire? Or do you not worry about it?

i was going to make up a set of spacers out of metal that will center the tire in the bead lock. they will be about a quarter in. thick and i will place them between the tire and the bolts in 4 places then start tighting them up. mike

i mounted one up this morning the out side ring flexs a bit more than i liked but i think it will be fine. i can always roll a ring for the inside to get the flex out of it. when i put 36 bolts in it, i had no idea how long i would take to tightwen them all. i started useing a electric drill and set it on the #2 torque setting.

my pressnuts came from amco ent. in ft.wort tx there ph# is 817-281-7697. they are a metric fastner supply. i used 8m/m which is just about the same size as 5/16 with 36 bolts around the ring. a pain in the ass to tighten up but none leaked at the sealing surface. thats about all the info i can give you for home brewed beadlocks. get busy and start fabbing. mike
