This is a local FJ55 here in Corvallis and it has this weird attachment to the PTO gear box. Any ideas what it could be??

I have more pictures of the pig if you want to see them.

its looks like its converted to hydralic(sp)

What landpimp said. There looks to be a hydraulic line in and out below the switch. Does it still have the PTO linkage, or was it some kind of home brew setup to run a hydraulic pump from the PTO linkage?

Yep, it is converted to hydrualic, and I bet there is an electric snowplow pump under the hood, so it can be used when the engine stalled(albiet for a short amount of time with all the parasitic losses...) I am not sure, but I am guessing it still had the mech. driveshaft too, so it was able to be used either way?

No the PTO driveshaft isn't there. I was showing my room mate the pictures and he started going off on his theory and I proved him wrong. Saying that the hydraulic pump was to add extra power. But I was right, the hyrdraulic pump is used to power the PTO.

Ahh! He couldn't keep the PTO drive shaft when he did the swap so he rigged a hydro slave and put the winch back in action. Very ingenuitive. I wonder how it works?

Probably like a power steering set up. I bet it has a resevoir under the hood with the hydraulic fluid and it becomes pressured off of a belt hooked to the pully. If I ever catch the guy i'll stop him and ask him some questions. I've seen him driving around before he looks like a japanese kid that uses it to drive around. Minus the carnage on the front fender the rest of the body is straight.

I can't imagine headers being worth that kind of hassle. I would've just put a pillowblock on the frame rail and redirected the driveshaft...

I'd like to know what he's running for a pump. Engine driven or PTO driven? With the right valve setup and enough pump you could get variable speed control - at any load. I'd direct couple it instead of the chain and sprocket though.

It probably wasn't done for the headers, or for getting unstuck, but it would be kick ass for logging and real work.
