I have a 51 CJ3A with a 327, sm465, dana 300. The previous owner put big headers on it that extend to the outside of the framerails. I am looking to get new ones that stay inside the framerails so I can keep them out of the rocks. Anyone have an application similar to mine runnin shorty headers? I'd rather get good opinions than try to fit them by trial and error. Thanks

don't know how you are gonna route the exhaust past the transfercase with a SM465 unless you are using a hydraulic clutch set up..no room on pass side for exhaust so you would have to do a cross-over and lose lots of ground clearance, then you'ld have to wrap the exhaust with lots of heat tape cause your brake and fuel lines run down drivers side....thought alot about this cause I have same set-up (except hydraulic) and hate to hit the headers....use flowmasters, can take the hits and not smash. let me know what you think...v8cjmark@citycom.com and let me know if you figure it out how to work...Mark

I was plannin on doin the crossover w/ one flowmaster, but I am not anywhere near the point of running exhaust yet so I won't be able to give you info on what I actually do for a long time. Anyone else have advice or pics on doin this?

your best bet is to use manifolds. The manifolds flow pretty well, plus you can get a good exhaust guy to route the exhaust pipe up and out of the way. You will want some insulation on either the pipe or on the floorboard, shit gets hot.

I hate friggen headers now, I'll stick with my manifolds...

You could use the Corvette rams horn style cast manifold (center dump) in the 2 1/2" flavor. I think PAW still carries a replica (originals too $$). I would then do a single 2 1/2" out to a 3" if room permits, you could run one engine bank headpipe forward and under and around the oil pan and connect with the opposite bank. Then run it single out the to the back. I still like this exhaust routing: http://www.4x4wire.com/tech/josh4x4/exhaust/

good info cj8scrmbld, with that system, do they sell it as a kit or do they custom make them on the vehicle? obviously i'm too far from that shop in CO, so i was wondering if they sell kits. Also, do you know what would work best on the drivers side? center dump or rear dump? in order to Y in the pass. side exhuast. thanks

No "kits" as far as I am aware. But ANY muffler shop should be able to bend up the tube in that manner. I would say either center or rear dump will work, which ever fits your app.....actually it really does not matter because they can mate the pipe easy enough. Either dump will work as the lead pipe will bend towards the rear and the forward pipe (the one crossing over) will just run into the other....picture a "y" on it's side. John
