: Wireless winch control warning?
Hypoid Drive 01-03-2002, 12:56 PM I just wanted to let people know that a couple of friends of mine were out wheeling in tellico the other day when one of the older whellers got stuck. My frien jumped out to help him with his winch because the guy has bad knees . The guy had a warn winch with the new remote controls where he could operate it from the d. seat. Anyway when my buddy grabed the winch (hs9500i) buy the rope to pul it out the guy behind the wheel accidently hit in button and jerked my buddys hand into the winch do to it being so fast. The problem was the remote dosent cut off exactly when you release the button it still reeels in about 2 feet. My friend almost lost his hand luckly the bottom of the roller fairlead was broke and gave just enough to keep from breaking his hand.
just wanted to tell this to make others aware to be careful:eek:
Old Scout 01-03-2002, 01:05 PM Why did he grasp the rope before he put it in neutral:question:
Belly Dragger 01-03-2002, 01:06 PM Scary!
Thanks for the warning, especially since the ones that would suffer would be the usee not the user.
Hypoid Drive 01-03-2002, 01:14 PM he did put it in nuetral but couldnt pull it out it was in a bind so they were going to unspool it in gear. He had almost three feet of wire otside of the fiarlead not counting the rope it was just so quick and the remote just didnt cut off instantly either. I just wanted to post it for a warning to people, esp younger wheelers that didnt have that much experience with winches that you could lose an arm or finger very quickly and on accident::(
WheelingPiazza 01-03-2002, 04:50 PM This isnt a wireless remote thing.. THis happens with the standard control as well.. I noticed the same thing when I was spooling in a buddies hs9500. The motors are so quick that its really hard to control..

randii 01-03-2002, 05:00 PM Makes me happy to have a slow but steady winch. :D
I haven't encountered too many situations outside of competition where a speedy winch is much of an advantage -- and I have encountered a few where slow speed came in handy.
I have a wireless winch control kit setting on my counter -- the review article will definitely include commentary on the speed with which the winch turns on and off... the ones I have used so far seem pretty consistent whether there's a wire between the controller and winch or not.

Toy 4Runner Man 01-03-2002, 07:29 PM alway got to watch yourself, especially if someone else has the controls! I hate to see shit like this happinging, Not good having people getting hurt!
oldjeep 01-03-2002, 07:31 PM My 8274 does the same thing - nothing to do with the remote. Under no load, it'll spool in a few feet after you let the power off.
I use a cable hook that came with my superwinch and use that since I have seen hands and fingers crushed in the cable...I used a similar hook with my old desert dynamics winch also....take no chances with machinery!
TNToy 01-03-2002, 09:51 PM That's why you make your winch monkey let go of the cable in to power out the first foot. Then he can disengage the clutch after it stops moving.
This is one reason I like my dash mounted remote-socket... I can back out the first foot before he's even out of the cab.
