I think they are standard gutter mounts.....pop on down to your local ski or bike shop that sells thule or Yakima racks and examine them first hand. Used sporting goods shops tend to have them cheap.

Depending on how much weight you intend to put up there, and how many attachment legs you're going to have, its a good idea to use wiiiiiide legs on the inside of the drip rail so as to spread out the contact area and take less chance of bending the lip.

A good cheap way to do this if you are going to fab you're own feet is to simply roll the edge of the inner foot then flatten it somewhat so as to give as much contact as possible. Easy to do assuming you have metalworking machines on hand. Once you get going you can cut/stamp and roll them out for peanuts.

I've used a lot of the thule racks and for general purposes they are fine, but for heavy expedition racks, you're going to want more security in the rack.

Also, if you're going to build a BIG rack, you might make the outside tubes a bit wider than the roof . If its 'expedition' quality, it will save some of the upper sheet metal as it acts as a 'skid' against inopportunely located trees on off camber turns.

I like the proto bumper alot. How much does it weigh sans winch?

Take a gander here, at least for the concept.

That tawayama.com sites pretty cool... do you drive your own wheels or do they supply? Sounds a little pampered for me but definately a vacation thought! .. that rack looked sweet .. I might go with a combination of round and square tubing..and definately build the rack a touch wider... I've already got my gutter banged up by those tricky trees you mentioned Seer.. I'll take the bumper down the street and have her weighed in a weeks or so... I'd like to know myself... I know its much lighter then an ARB I tried to lift but that thing seemed like it was built to bash into bank vaults... or hitting trees on the trail if you were traveling at over 100mph... anyhow I'll post more info as we get moving on em...

hmmm! well those of us who are sportin' an ARB bumper are pretty hapy with it's strength, despite the weight! :flipoff2:

mine has served me well so far, and it's nice to know your bumper will NOT be falling off or bending like others out there...your bumper does look pretty cool though....likew it's better approack angle on ends, but are you sure it will e strong enough when needed? how is it built? are you planning on adding any recovery loops up there or just using teh winch? I'd suggest to add a couple well reinforced right where teh mounting plates are welded to the actual "skin" of the bumper...you did bring them right up through the whole profile, didn't you?

oh! and regarding roof-rack feet.....the more and the wider the footprint the better! My gutters are proof of that...while at the dealer back in '96 or so, they "accidently" drove it into the bay without thinking of teh height of teh rack!
...of course that did enable the purchase of a custom Safari-gard roof-tack designed for teh roor-top tent, ...and the wavy gutters just blend in now with all teh other beauty marks it has earned over the years.....

Paul (thinking about that for when we build a rack for the LWB.....will prolly contour a 1/4" rod to fit in the gutter, and than weld teh rack feet directly to that....multiple places so the weight is more evenly distributed! I designed this rack to be built outa aluminum back in '95, but just never got my welding skills up to snuff to do so with AL...soon....)
