: Who runs an x-cab on a reg cab or 4runner frame??
dangerber 01-03-2002, 03:28 PM I need some pics and info about putting an'84-88 style x-cab on an '86 4runner frame. Brewing up a new rig idea! :D The runner has too much sheet metal!!
How much new body mount work has to be done? What to do about the gas tank? Just get a pickup tank?
Thanks in advance!!

vova, put an extra cab on his reg cab frame. and then double bobbed his bed---SWEET!
the 4runer gas tank is mounted 2 inches lower to clear the seating area. i put a 2 inch body lift on my 4runner and then lifted the gas tank up onto the pickup mounts which are already there on the fram. the rear section needs to be cut and welded higher--simple mod!!!
i assume you may have to tweek the body mount positions slightly especially in the bed area, maybe a flatbed would be easier, not to mention pretty kool!:D :D
dangerber 01-03-2002, 03:44 PM THanks Paul! I forgot to mention that the plan does include doing a flatbed, so mounting positions back there are no problem. I am tooo hard on the back half of my runner for sheet metal, perfect flatbed candidate!! :D
Leonel 01-03-2002, 07:15 PM Brian Ellinger has also an x-cab body on a regular cab frame,Vova had a pro-body man do his and it looks tight.

I want to do this too!
In addition to Brian Ellinger and Vova, CAZ has done this too. There is information on his website (http://www.outdoorwire.com/4x4/staff/caz/trucks/84extra.htm) . I talked to Brian and he said the hardest part was bobbing the bed. You do need to move the rear cab mounts back. Andy has a 1" body lift, Vova has a 1 1/2", and Brian has a 2" BL. Andy said that he had to do a little "sheetmetal massaging" to get the gas tank to fit, but Vova and Brian didn't have any interference.

The extra cab body will mount on the 4Runner frame with at least a 1" body
lift to clear where the frame rises over the rear axle.
The front body mounts under the front bumper will line up perfectly
The body mounts under the dash will also line up perfectly.
The cab mounts in the rear of the extra cab will need to be moved to line up
with the cab. They sell these mounts at the dealership.
Shifters line up perfectly.
The 4Runner frame is the best frame for wheeling because it has an extra
piece of metal welded inside that runs from under the quarter panels to the
cross member.
Take a look under your Runner and where there should be a plastic plug
like on the Pick ups, you will see there is actually a metal plate in there.
Good luck with your conversion.:usa:
Benny 01-03-2002, 11:09 PM Here is mine.
'82 Shortbed frame, '85 2wd xtracab, Chevy Rear springs and 38.5x14.50 SXs on 15x10 wheels with 2 1/2" backspacing :D

Not sure on the wheelbase yet. I may move the front forward a couple inches. depending on the springs.
Actually Harry, I only have 2 pictures of my truck between the time that I put it on a standard cab frame, and when I stuck everything on the 4runner chassis. That picture was not one of them ;-)

davefj40 01-04-2002, 05:00 AM hey cax, did you ever sell that truck(rolling chassis)?
dave
Yup I did!
I am still trying to sell my '85 4runner chassis though - I can't believe that I haven't had any bites on that! I am asking next to nothing for it!
CAZ
dangerber 01-04-2002, 09:53 AM Thanks for all of the replies and pics! I think it will be easier than I was thinking. I've got a Rockstomper cage that I will be putting in, so for the rear cab mounts, I'll just fab new ones that also tie the cage into the frame at that point. Kill 2 birds with one chunk of steel! :D
2FNLOW: I was noticing the plate that you speak of the other night, as I watched my clutch slave drain all of its fluid. I guess that answers my question of whether it would be worth it for me to find a pickup frame...I like being able to use what I've got!

does anyone have any of the pics of marlins conversion.
the 83 short with the late 89-95 cab?

I don't have my damn red star yet, but I have a pic of Marlin's rig. I found it when I searched for "vova" when I was looking for pics.
