Hey, guys. I'm considering purchasing a 1999 Discovery Series II and want to know how much weight would you guys be comfortable towing halfway across the country on a regular basis(twice a year let's say). Would it be a comfortable ride(no white knuckles) with #3000 on a 16' dovetail? I am curious to know what info you guys have to offer me. Thanks in advance.

What does the trailer weigh?? How much tongue weight? Any steep hills or mountains in your path?

Well, let's just say that I live in the Great Plains, and I want to go to Cali once or twice a year and Colorado is right in the way. I don't know what the trailer weighs, but I would guess all of #1500-#2000? I can always mess with T-weight and that stuff later, I am just curious to know what the #rating is on one.

I don't have my manual in front of me, but I think it says #7000 max blah, blah. With trailer brakes. Wait... 7000Lbs.??? WTF? I'll have to double check later.
I was wondering the same thing? What's the difference in weight between that Jeep in the other post and my IH SII? :D

The manual states the limit on my 96 SE7 is 6000lbs. I used it to pull the Garwood around Tahoe this summer and the power at 6200ft pulling 4000 lbs was not that great! I would hate to see me pulling 6000lbs at some of those 10,000ft passes in Co!

5500 is the most I would do, I think that is the limit.
7700 is low range tow limit so it will handle the weight just does not have the power. i have been over the 5500 and had payload in a DI and you have no power but it tracked and stopped great.
You will be SLOW over the mountains and the little v8 really needs to be worked.
Also they don't like tongue weight UNLESS you have SLS or at least OME HDs
Other than that they are great to tow with. Good brakes and very stable for 100in wheel base.

So, as long as I can keep my rockcrawler under #3000, I'm good to go! I appreciate the input.

it'll tow it just fine! But you REALLY must have trailer brakes! I tow my TJ behind my Disco II every time I go wheelin' and most of the time I really can't tell its back there. And many of the trips have been 'two days to get there' half way across the freakin country tows. (and it sure is a comfy ride:D ) Just load the trailer evenly with a bit of front bias and if your find its still front heavy, put some air-bags on the rear, wont hurt the 'day to day' ride but will help even out the rear sag.

Does anyone tow a D90 with their DII? Im considering getting a DII or Tahoe and want to be able to pull my 90(on a trailer w/ brakes) on the long trips.

I flat tow my CJ5 w/ a Disco 1 with the 3.9 and its almost not there. I think with the bigger engine you shouldn't have a problem with the added weight of a trailer if your towing a rig.
