I have a 89 V6 Automatic and it came with a 3" body lift ... The problem I am having is I can't even get the shifter into "L" and the
4wheel shifter into "L4"

Any comments/ideas on how to fix it would be GREAT !!!

From one newbie to another . . .we need a little more info. did you just get this truck and it has this problem? Or have you had it for a while and it just started doing it?

The obvious culprit is the body lift. Pull the shifters and the console around them and check for clearance where the shifters pass into the body. Might be time to break out the sawzall.

Welcome. :flipoff2:

I would say that it is the body lift too. The shift lever is probably hitting yur body. Just take your boot off to check and see. If it is not that, do you have to hav the tranny in neutral or anything? Im not sure cause I have never had a Toyota automatic, but that might be soemthing to think about...

Good luck...

Good luck...

My tacoma with an automatic has to be in neutral or the gears grind like mad after having to pull really hard (I promise, I've only done this once). The truck has to be at a complete stop and in neutral. It doesn't like park either.

If the 4wd knob hits the auto shifter, try pulling the 4lo knob and see if that gives enough clearance.

Like that othe newbie said, not enough info to give good information in response.

When they put the body lift in the Runner they need to adjust the linkage
on the tranny.

This will cause the shifters not to reach into L and 4L.

You can see the linkage if you go under the truck and look up to where
the shifters would be on the floor overhead.

I am not sure of the adjustments or if there was supposed to be some
extensions that where supplied with the kit and not installed (maybe)

If you check a Good Toyota manual I am sure they have the specs you need.

Good luck.:usa:

I did not read all the responces so this may be repeat. It's your body lift. You need to use a 3" drop bracket for the shift linkage that goes from the bottom of the floor under the 4H,4L 2H shifter. It is a C shaped braket and the BL should have had a 2-3" extension on it between the C and the bottom of the floor. Without this, the C linkage will actually hit the D shaft mounting flange and bolts when shifted. My 2" BL with auto is doing this with the drop bracket when I'm under extreme load so it is really a tight fit anyway. Look under there and it will make sence.

I just read some of the responces - for those of you with 5 speeds, the auto does not have a shift boot or rod going through the floor so that is not the problem. As I mentioned, it's probably the linkage below and is for sure something to do with the BL not done correctly. I had to modify 2 linkages below to make mine work.

Hey Hersh ... I looked under the rig and saw the "C" bracket, it's about 3" long, but it still won't go into L4. I had a friend try and put it into L4 while I was under the rig and it hit the D shaft, Are there any fixes to correct this ??? Did you have to bend anything or fab something up to make it work ??? As for the not being able to get into the "L" gear, I adjusted the linkage and I am now able to get into "L" gear. Thanks ... :D :D :D

Anyone else got any more ideas/fixes to get it into "L4" ???

With a 3" BL there should be a 3" drop bracket on the top of that C shaped shifter/linkage. I got mine seperate from Warn/Black Diamond. It is one made for a 3" BL so you should be able to get that and bolt it in - problem fixed. Or just make your own bracket to drop that C about 3" so it is centered with the D shaft.

With a 3" BL there should be a 3" drop bracket on the top of that C shaped shifter/linkage.

Mine came in the kit (trailmaster) and originally would not shift out of 4x unless I went into low.
upon inspection..........I found that the "C" bracket flex's a little bit.
after adjusting several times, it now works correctly.......
So adjust it and maybe add a support to the "C" bracket, I think I'll have to do that at some point.......
