I was wondering if anyone has a diecent write-up on how to do a gear install on a GM axle. I setup dana 44's and 60's but have never done a gm axle. I tried to search but couldn't get it to work.

What difference does it make whether it is a GM, Dana or for that matter a Volvo, you still want to achieve the same type of pattern and specified backlash

Not sure about the pinion, but IIRC the carrier shims are on the outside, so you don't have to press the bearings on/off to change the shims.

I was refering to the crush sleve. How do you test the pattern with a crush sleve? Can you put it on and take if off or is it a 1 time thing. Put it together and you are done?

You do your set up without the crush--tighten the nut down until you feel preload then check your depth and pattern. When you get what you want, then finish it up with the crush sleeve and seal.

yea what he said..... i did my 12 bolt in my 2wd chev without it at first then threw it in. oh and on dana axle alot of peopl eput the shims between the carrier and the bearings but it's a helluva lot easier to do it like the chevy's. in fact id prefer it sinc eon dana axles the carrier and bearing have a radius that should mate together with out a shim in it. it bend the shim and can make your measurement inconsistient.
