Not a total pile of crap but needs some $$$ to make it worth keeping. I know you can get 35 spline and even 40 spline spools for them. 8.875 ring gear and I know you can go up to 5.38 at least. I think they were in 1/2 tons from 64-82.

Other than the c-clips they are between a 44 and 60. The ring gear, pinion gear, and axleshafts are larger than a 44.

12 bolt axleshafts are larger? I thought they were either 28 or 30 spline.

I am thinking its a 12 bolt. Make a ff out of it and they are not that bad of an axle.

I saw one break last weekend. Friken axle came out along with all the gear oil. The guy didn't have a spare so they dragged his rig back to camp using the backing plate as a wheel.

Yep, they're 30 spline (10 bolts are 28) and slightly larger diameter than a 44 axleshaft.

12 bolts are 31 spline. early 10 bolts are 28 and later 10 bolts are 30. As long as you are sensible and run 35's or less they hold up very well. I had my 12 bolt with 4.10's and a detroit for 13 years and never broke anything, but that front 44 would let go of about 4 shafts per season. Their weak point is the C clip and the bearing cap on the ring gear side. They have a forged cap to fix that and moser axles for the other. Unless you have 5K plus or run more than 36's a 12 bolt will do you just fine.:p
