I have acquired a instrument cluster from a 1981 truck with the tach in the dash, will that qork in my 82 dash that doesn't have the tach? If it will work, what will have to be done to make it work correctly? and yes i did do a search:flipoff2:
Thats really something that your just gonna have to try yourself. The chances of someone else having done that same thing are slim to none...
Good luck..

What the f$#K are you talking about. I know a lot of guys that have taken a SR5 dash cluster and put it in a non SR5 truck so they can have a Tach. Sometimes I wonder about you TyTy:rasta:

Best thing to do is pull your cluster and put the new on in. The plug ins are the same and with any luck all the gauges will work. Some times you have to move a wire or two in the plugs to get everything to work:rasta: :usa: :rasta:

I have not tried to actually swap them, but I will gurantee it wont work. The pin system is different between the years. You need to find an 81 cluster. the '81 uses round connections and the '82 used flat plugs. You could make it work by cutting the connectors in the truck wiring and crimping on the new ones, but here are ALOT of wires in there. and its NOT worth it.
I put a 83 SR5 dash cluster in my 79. But yes it was a pain in the ass, becasue like what was mentioned before they changed to a flat plug from a round plug. But what sucked worse is that the 79 wiring diagram was very detailed and showed the end of the plug and extacly were it went. Were as the 83 diagram was not as detailed and was hard for me to follow so I basically just ended up poping in wires to see if it worked, tell I got all the gauges and lights working.
