After searching the archives, I still have a couple of questions. I am starting a SM420 swap tomorrow. Majority of the info I have gathered says "use the 3-speed pressure plate on the 2F swap." I am assuming that I also have to use a 3-speed flywheel, is this correct?

I don't know if there is a differance between the 2f and f engine flywheels but on our 72' sm420 conversions a Chevy 11" clutch fit inside the flywheel without having to grind down the o/s diamenter. Our flywheels have holes going to the o/s to relieve the clutch dust and debrie that could accumulate. Used the stock pressure plate. My son has been driving his as a daily driver and been through the Rubicon and Fordyce numerous times since June with no problems. Hope this helps.

You can use either the F or 2F Flywheels for this swap. I have used both and havn't seen any real difference between the two. You do have to use the three speed style pressure plate, with a standard Chevy 11" disc.
Something else to think about, I have been modifying the Toy three speed bearing retainers to fit the SM420. This way the indexing to the bellhousing is correct and you don't have to worry about multiple pieces fitting together.

What are you doing to the 3 speed bearing retainer?

Basically I just chuck it up in the lathe and cut a new seal pocket and retainer ring grooves on the inside to match the 420. I then weld the old bolt holes and drill the new 420 patern in it. It usually takes about an hour or so and its ready to bolt on.

EricFJ40,
Thanks. I decided to have a sleeve machined to fit around the SM420 retainer.
Jason- I've seen the Extreme Bends site. That is where I got my plate.

You can use your 4 speed flywheel and pressure plate with the 420 swap. I did and it works perfect. I also use the 4 speed clutch fork.
