: 64" Dana 60 with 30 spline shafts, Question??
What I'm talking about
Dana 60 rear axle. with detroit locker, disc brakes, 4.56 gears. Overall width is 64" from wheel face to wheel face. This is a full floater 8 lug axle with 30 spline shafts.
What would have a 64" 60 stock? (the axle has not been cut, according to the guy that has it)
How big are 30 spline axles?
Will the 30 spline hold up?
If I could buy this for, say $800-$850 what do you think?:D
Scout Dude 01-04-2002, 06:26 AM MY Ford D60 SF is only 62" wide...maybe the 3/4 & 1 tons for that year were 64" FF units. It is out of a '67.
Edit: The price seems fine when you consider the gearing and locker.
Thanks
So what does everyone think about 30 spline shafts?
Most of thte mid 60's to mid 70's rear FF D60s were in the 64" range. Some with 30 splines, some with less. I think the 30 splines (1.3" dia) will hold up fine. If you want to go to 35 splines, you will have to see if the spindle bore is 1.6". Those early D60s usually have the smaller spindles so you will have to bore out the spindles to fit the 1.5" shafts through.
Hypoid Drive 01-04-2002, 09:11 AM Eric if you keep the 30 spline , what you have is a dana 44 axle shaft with a larger r&p . The shafts wont hold up to large tire and low gears. The width you metioned are a common width on vans:smokin:
Grandpa Jeep 01-04-2002, 09:57 AM I would think since it's full floating it would be a little stronger than a SF 44. And if you do break a shaft, you can still drive home on the front end.
A agree that the axle shaft is the size of a D44, but how many rock crawlers break 30 spline FF D60 rear shafts?
If you do break a rear shaft, you can still drive with rear axle power if you have a locker or spool.
zstrange 01-04-2002, 04:04 PM plus it takes about 3 minutes to change a shaft. dont even have to pull the wheel.
G.C. Bandit 01-04-2002, 05:38 PM 30 spline will hold up just fine. I no 2 guys running 39.5 boggers and another running 42's. They bother are over 200 to1 and have never had a problem with it. Actually one of them broke a stub front 60 and the rear was still there ready to go. Or think about this how many toyotas have you seen brake a rear axel, not many if any!
Hypoid Drive 01-04-2002, 06:43 PM if you want to run the 30 spline that fine its your stuff I just wanted to make you'all aware of what you had
High5 01-05-2002, 05:02 AM i ran a 30spline rear 60 in my jeep with 35's and a v8 for 3 years. while i never broke a shaft in that time they were not looking too good when i sold it. they shafts were twisted at the splines and one was pretty bad. the remainder of the life of that shaft was very limited. when i stepped up to a 60 front and 38.5's it got replaced with a cab and chassis 14bolt. :D

I agree. If you can afford to go 35 spline, you might as well do it. If you can't, stick with 30 splines and get some spare axles from the junk yard. They should be cheap.
For what its worth, I am running 35 spliners in my rear 60. :D
i have seen the dana 30 spline fail often. the toyota axle must be made from a better alloy and that combined with the realitavly light weigh of a toy they don't fail often. however toy ring gears tend to exploded pretty easy so maybe that saves the axle.
anyhow i would set my sights on upgrading to 35 spline. and just carry spares until then
Lance 01-06-2002, 09:37 AM They break. Sit at Little Sluice on a long weekend and you'll see Toyota rears break, D60 FF 30sp break, etc. The problem with running it till you can afford 35sp is it means getting a new locker. I suppose you could weld up the 30sp carrier and then get a locker/spool when you go 35sp down the road.
camo most Toy rears are behind :rainbow: 4 cyl. Most D60 are usually behind V8's. ;)
And I have to laugh when people that say that a broken FF rear takes 3 minutes to change. When you pull out the broken axle, where do you think the broken piece is? That's right, it's still in the carrier. :flipoff2:
Alaskan Assassin 01-06-2002, 10:25 AM What is the difference between a 30 splined 60 and a 30 splined 14 bolt? I know the ring and pinion is bigger in the 14 bolt, but are the axle shafts the same size?
Thanks for the info guys. I think I'm going to pass on this one.:D
I'll wait until I can get 35 spline axles.

No the 14 bolt has 1.5" shafts and the D60 has something like 1.3" shafts. The 14 bolts splines are course while the D60's are fine.
Alaskan Assassin 01-06-2002, 05:17 PM Ahhhh... I thought they were the same:rolleyes:
