My name is Isaac, I am 16, I live in the Antelope Valley, CA. I feel I need to be taking advantage of the desert around me. I have a few friends with full size Blazeers from the 80's. I see how much money they are puttin out weekly in gas so i decided i want something more economical than a full size. So i asked around and everyone was like "Chevy! Chevy! Chevy!," and directed me here.

So anyways to cut to the chase, i know nothing about cars and or trucks let alone off roadin. I wanna start and need some assistance. I dont own a vehicle yet and thought maybe you Toyota dudes could help me out.

ya some of the guys in here will mock you for your questions, but I understand I was where you are. I got my dads old 1981 toyota 4x4. I recomend one of those, or an 1985 toyota 4x4 extra cab. Their a good wheeler, and I just like the room the extra cab adds. Look around for one at your local auto auction, or from a person on the board.

Otherwords may I be one of the first to welcome you to the board, and hope you enjoy wheeling...

Ya everyone on here hates noobs, but they have to admit that they were all one at one time. I know damn good and well no one was born with wheelin knowledge.

With that said you made a smart decision to buy a Toyota, i have a 1980 Pickup and I love it. I would recommend a first gen pickup, they are cheap, run good, and you can go wheelin good :)

Welcome to the board and if you have any beef with anyone on here, just give em this :flipoff2:

A stock yota is VERY wheelable. When your ready for upgrades the sky is the limit, just basically depends on your wallet.

A Toy with crossover or hysteer steering, good leafs, proper gears, lockers and 35 or 36" tires will provide alot of fun and go VERY far on most trails.

The stock push pull steering plain out sucks if you want alot of wheel travel.

Good leafs provide a decent lift to run a decent size tire and gain added wheel travel.

You'll need proper gearing to help the four gerbals under the hood. I'd recommend 4:88's for anything smaller than 35's. Anything 35" and bigger go with 5:29's. I'm running 4:56's with 35's and it's VERY high strung,5th gear is not even useable anymore. If I ever have gear problems I'm gonna regear with 5:13's

Lockers will get all 4 wheels pullin. With open diffs, even though you get out and lock the hubs, you've still only got a 2wd truck.

Although if you don't know much about wheelin, running open diffs for a while will teach you how to wheel better, I think. You will learn how to take different lines cuz you HAVE to in order to make it. You will learn how to make the best of what you have.

Running 35's on Toy axles will provide enough clearance to have a decent wheeler. Most guy's with time and experience under their belt are running 38's or bigger but they all(or most) started out with 33's & 35's. Their rigs have gotten more extreme as they gain more seat time and desire to do harder lines. I'd LOVE to have a set of 38's right now,I just plain out can't affoard a set right now.

There's tons of little things that I'm missing but they are ALL talked about here on Pirate. The search feature is a bit clogged at times but ,trust me, the info IS there if you want to find it. The little info I gave you will get you started on ideas to get your feet wet.

I got my 1980 for 400 dollars (bad intake manifold/head) still running. I have the worst driving record out of anyone I know and my insurance is still relatively cheap. So you can have a 1980 toy pickup insured cheaply with the same guts as pretty much any truck on the road. There are a s$%tload of upgrades for toys, a lot of them suck and a lot of them will give you a wheeling machine from hell. Listen to these guys they will guide you well. They have already stopped me from a few stupid mistakes that I was about to make (aside from my free pro crap springs :flipoff2: ). One thousand dollars at a time......

If you can afford it go EFI (feul injected) and never look back. Some times depending on your local area you can get good deals on them. EFI started in 1985 they are also factory solid axle and pretty hard to find (at least when I was looking). Trucks and 4-runners 1986 and newer are IFS (independent front suspension) if you end up getting one of these and get into rockcrawling heavily you will most likley end up doing a SAS (solid axle swap). This is just a few more things to help you in your search hope they help out some good luck and welcome.

if i were you, beginner seeking to stay beginner or go hard core, get an ifs truck or 4runner. easier to find and cheaper. pretty tough stock, and capable for mild wheeling. if your gonna go hard core, its' the truck to get, cause you cut everything off of the solid axle toys, save for the axle anyway, which you could substitute a d44 or go bigger, for better turning radius.and you alredy get the ifs box!and wide rear axle w/ bigger brakes, guaranteed better tranny over 1st gen. and easier to find EFI.:flipoff2: good luck.

Sound advice up above.... start off slow and wheel to your abilities. Just go out and start learning with other guys that wheel. Get a rig that doesn't need alot of work and start saving your cans and bottles now for breakage and upgrades:D You will make mistakes, we all did and still do... just have fun and try not to roll anything you care about anyways;) Do talk to others and take advice from those you trust and don't get pressured in to stupid stuff you aren't comfortable with. Hey... I took plenty of go arounds when I first started out, no shame in that, and go for it when you feel confident! Let us know when you find something!
