Fred,

It should be the medium duty TF999 if the CJ8 has the 6cyl. These are still used up to this day in TJ's although it has went through some changes.

4cyl would probably be the lighter duty TF909 or TF904. 909 is a 904 with a lockup torque converter.

Since it's an AMC era jeep there could be anything thrown into it. You never know what you get until you actually inspect it.

AtomicBeesting,
Thanks. It supposedly is a TF999. I have a '98 TJ with the AX-15 and am strongly, really strongly considering swapping in an auto. I know a TF999 from a TJ will bolt right up with just a few little "adjustments". I can get the tranny from this '85 Scrambler but I bet the bolt patterns at both ends would be very different, requiring adapters from, mmmmmm, AA or someone, which would put that swap back into the sort of expensive range.

Fred,
If you take the auto out of the 8, what are you going to do with the 8 after? The tranny should be a bolt up to the engine and the TC (dependig on the spline cout of your TC). You will have to relocate the crank sensor too, etc...

The 8 belongs to a good friend of mine. The engine is currently dead. You know, you gotta put oil in 'dem things ;) Anyway, it looks like he has hold of a 4.3 and tranny that he's going to drop into it, thus freeing the existing tranny. He also has a "spare" tranny for it, a TF999 also, so I may have my choice of one of the two. The ideal thing for me would be to find a TF999 from a TJ, but that ain't turning out to be easy ;)
I didn't know about the CPS relocation. A couple of people how have done the TF999 swap from a TJ into a TJ, either didn't have to relocate it, of failed to mention that. Why's it need relocating ?? At any rate, that shouldn't be a big deal.

Thanks,

This planned swap is probably not worth the headache or expense. It will be cheaper in the long run to find the TJ version auto of the same vintage. You are probably going to need the PCM and possibly the ECM from the donor TJ as well.

1.) the '85 version TF999 has a different bell housing pattern than your 4.0.

2.) It's not an electroninc controlled tranny, so there won't be an interface with your PCM / ECM (probably the biggest hurdle)

3.) the output is 23 spline. Not sure about the input of your 231. The last swap of this nature I did we ran into the 231 being a 21 spline. (The 231 was originally behind an AX-15.) But I seem to remember somewhere along the line Jeep upgraded the 231 to a 23 spline input??? Don't know for sure.

Good news is the D300 and NP 231 share the same bolt pattern.

Again my .02 it's not worth the hassle. THis is not a do-it yourselfer project, with out alot of research and planning.

Bob, thanks for the thoughts. I've looked into this swap (TF999 from a TJ though) for a while now. A couple of things. The TF999's in TJ's aren't electronic controlled. There is only one output from the PCM and that's for the torque converter lockup sol.. I wouldn't use that anyway, the plan being to wire it to a switch in the cab so I can manually control the lockup. That would allow me to lock it up, say, going down steep decents and get some engine braking. The input shaft on the TJ's (4.0L 6 cyl, which mine is) xfer case is 23 spline. Good that everyone agrees about the bolt pattern being the same on the 231 and D300. The big question is the bolt pattern on the 258 vs the 4.0L that I have. You are the only one that has said that they are not the same. Everyone else has said that they are the same. Anyway, it should be easy enough to check. The CJ8 belongs to a friend here in town.
The ideal thing would be if I could find a TF999 from a donor TJ, but I'm not having much luck at that.
