How much do they really help? I just installed one on the scout and was curious if it actually does cool the fluid that much.

Yes. :D keeps mine from boiling over. BTW I used a tranny cooler.

Still have a few things to complete on it but it's maiden voyage at new years went well. No breakage and lots of fun. Going to hungry valley tomorrow to play before it goes back to the shop for the finishing touches monday. Try to take some pics tomorrow. How goes it ken? Gonna make it to TDS?

Don't have any temp specs but my 5x7 tranny cooler I used made my squeelin AGR pump quiet down and act normal.

You gotta figure just having that much more fluid circulating alone has a good effect.
AGR :barf:

I used an auto tranny cooler i picked up at the local Advance Autoparts for about $30. Just plumbed it into the PS.

It stops my hydro winch from boiling over fluid like it used to... so it works for me.

I'm guessing it just hooks on to the return line coming out of the box??? I think I will add one if I have room. Not much room thanks to a 4.3 in SMALL engine campartment and already have a tranny cooler too!

I've got a factory oil cooler (in the radiator) that I think I'm gonna use when I do the hydro assist. Don't see why it wouldn't work.

Yup, i plumbed mine in on the low pressure return, right before returning into the resevior

Pete, I looked at that too. I'm also running a 4 core diesel radiator with oil cooler not being used. My concern is that it is routed too high and it would all drain back into the pump when you shut down. Crank up, and the pump empties itself into the radiator. Unless I'm missing something, I don't think it would work out. Instead, I just got a 12"x8" stacked plate cooler to plumb in.

Not so sure that would be a problem, since its on the return line. My factory resivoir is pretty high up.

I thought about hooking up the oil cooler, I have an adapter for the oil filter, but it would put the filter real close to the header. I could run an external filter, but the idea here is to reduce the clutter under the hood.

Here is the one I used on my TJ. It was the smallest I could find, and I mounted it on the drivers side fender next to the canister box.

I had a problem with PS fluid boiling while running in deep snow. I picked up a cooler from a full size ford car, mid 70's. http://www.home.gci.net/~bronco78/jack/overall.jpg

It is a small design, but seems to cool enough to do the job. It also does not pre heat the radiator, as a cooler in front the radiator will do. If you engine cooling system is on the edge now, placing a heat exchanger in front of it

I've seen those "small" ones on a couple of EB's in my travels.
Actually they were even smaller than that.

They were just mounted in the compartment like that.

Curious why you would want the smallest one you could find and why didnt you mount it where it will get air forced through it???

The only problem with these - is you transfer heat from the coolant to your power steering system and vise-versa. My radiator guy said to always use a separate cooler and don't mess with the built-in radiator ones.

I also used a tranny cooler for my PS cooler. I first used a Perma-cool brand PS cooler, a small 4 row unit. That really didn't help cool my "always wants to run hot and boil up" AGR stuff, so that's when I put in a 15,000 gvw tranny cooler for it. I also put in a Remote reservoir too. Those two combined really helped and my AGR stuff doesn't run hot anymore.
Oh, btw, I run the hydro assist. So, if you're not, then I think a normal sized PS cooler should do the trick.

Thats exactly what I was thinking, if your engine is running at 200+ how well do you think your radiator will cool your power steering???

Old Caddys have the small inline coolers like Bronco78 too.
Easy to fit/mount and effective.
Also, for larger coolers look at early Ford Granada's, easy to get to, up under front grill or some Hondas have decent inline oil coolers that do a good job --- always nice to grab one at PNP, Cheap, cheap

I wanted something similar to the EB coler but I wanted NEW. I located it away from the exhaust man., but still out of the way. I did not feel I needed to install it fwd or behind the rad.. So far it has performed just as I wanted it to in both Colorado cool mountain air and in the hot New Mexico air. No more :barf: ps fluid or noise from the PS..
