Hey, is the np205 the only transfer case with the circle with three bolts in it? Anything else unique to tell a 205 from a 203 or 208 ??
Thanks!

np 208 is all aluminum. np 203 has a 6 inch adapter housing in the front (sits between transmission to transfer case adapter and main transfer "case"). the 203 also has an aluminum intermediate extension housing where the rear driveline attaches. hope that's not to confusing.;)

That is true about a 203 having aluminum output except for 73 models that had steel. The easiest way to tell the diff is a 203 has a shifter with flat sides and will read 4 loc 4 hi neutral 2lo 2 loc and a 205 will have a round shifter that reads 4hi, 2hi, neutral and 4 low, plus unless someone has added a partime kit a 203 will have solid hubs. In a half ton from 73-79 all autos were 203's, all sticks except for 73 and 74 were 205's. Some 1 tons's had 205's behind autos and all 80 models were 205's.

Ok, thanks. The transfercase in question is out of the truck so I do not have a shifter for it so I cant see how it shifts;) But its from a 77 1/2 ton so it sounds like a 205.

the 203 is about the same size as a small import car and actually weighs more

Look on the front side of the case, if you clean off the crap there should be a tag. Unless someone removed it. The 3 bolt idler cover is the dead give away, though.

Ok cool, I now have 2 205's  When I bought the K5 the guy threw in a extra tranfercase (205) and transmission (350) for free :D Not to mention I got the K5 for less than 2000$

Powermad- Cool link to the info page. I don't know if it is your page but if so I was going to give you some more info on 205's you might like to add. In 1980 when they used the slip-yoke version on the 205, the speedo cable was on the pass. side. Previous to that I think all the fixed yoke version 205's had them on the drivers side. I'm not possitive on this but it does fall true for the two I have.

i have a spare 205 with fixed yoke on the PS.
I think it is from an 80 though and someone coverted it.

simple, easy way to tell if it's a 205, not a 203: 205's ALL have a 3 bolt idler shaft cover bolted to the back side, center of the case.
