Hypoid Drive 01-04-2002, 10:07 PM I have always built my own axles , but I am like you . I have built numerous 60's now and ill tell ya that buy the time you buy a decent core and put all that stuff in it you want a bought one will run about 1500.00 more than that but you will have 0 time in it. A dana 44 is another story you can come out on them :D :D
I think you forgot the brakes:)
Chances are those are gonna be bad too:)
You could save some money by welding it and getting one with gears that you can use already in it...
That is what my bro did.
patooyee 01-05-2002, 07:16 AM Man, you didn't even list bearings! Get one with as many useable parts in it as possible. I replaced the bearings, kingpin hardware, and calipers in mine and that's it. (Not interrested in going 35-spline quite yet.) The rotors aren't perfect but they'll do. I also welded the spiders up. In the end it was still probably around $400 in addition to the purchase price of $900. And I did all the work myself and had to machine down the hubs since it started as a dually.

Shaker 01-05-2002, 07:44 AM I had about $1100 minus locker when I rebuilt mine. I got my axle for 900.00 ........

Yep.
Now you see the light and understand why I elected to just buy them from Boyce. The rebuild price isn't going to change much if you rebuild/replace everything. The real difference will be the cost of the housings.

gunracer1 01-05-2002, 09:31 AM under 700.00 with a lock rite and 4.56 gears. but i look for danas all the time and just buy the cheap ones. i might just buy a detroit for this one. still be under a grand. mike
ok just because i also have one sitting in my front yard that i found at PNP and got for $235 :)
krcruiser 01-05-2002, 09:49 AM $4500 in a RC60 ARB with 4:88 and high steer, oh yea I still have to buy all the misc nuts, bolts, brake lines etc...figure in the time to run to around and get parts and the Dynatrac doesn't sound like such a rape price.
66CJdean 01-05-2002, 09:57 AM By the time I built my front and rear I had over $4500 into them.
Picked up a Dodge 60 front for $700. One Selectro, one drive flange, missing calipers, one caliper bracket torched, has welded carrier, & 4.88's.
Got the 35 spline Dana 60 ARB from Rusty's for $610... delivered :D:D:D
That is $1310 right there - I figure no more than $500 more in the whole thing by the time I am done... steering, calipers, rotors, etc.
Tony Sobrito 01-05-2002, 10:56 AM dana 60 good condition with 4.56 and trac lok $1000
detroit $525
2 sets carrier bearings$75
dynatrac arms $300
drive flanges $200
Still running 30 spline outers. I was lucky and found a complete military 60 in great shape. I tore it apart, installed the detroit and cut and turned the knuckles. Was able to reuse just about everything. i did buy new bearings for set up's and new for the detroit. still running orig calipers and pads etc... I used the stock tie rod up top for hi clearance steering. It takes along time to do this especially with job, wife and kids.... :)
Mike Knorr 01-05-2002, 01:26 PM Axle $700
axle shafts new $300
gears and locker $825
steering arms $330
Brake calipers $232
Caliper Brackets $310
Seals $75
U-joints $150
machine to 5 0n 5.5 $150
total $3072
Way more expensive than putting a 44 togther.
pcorssmit 01-05-2002, 06:17 PM Bought the axle for 750, total was around 1500 when it was in. Stock 4.56 gears, Detroit, carrier bearings, a couple wheel bearings, 1 high steer arm, seals, king pin bushings, etc.
I'm still counting on the 35 spline convertion, though.

Just why are you pricing some of this stuff out that should not have to be purchased separately?

well,,,
this axle is going into a EB so the long side will be shortend (i don't like cutting and resplining stock 24 year old axles)
new spindals because they have grooves in them from the seals rubbing for 24 years and i don't like speedy seals
i'm running 4.88 in the back and i like my gears about the same ratio????
the u joints are 24 years old
stock stubs on ford RR 60 are only 30 spline
the stock lock outs will not work on 35 spline stubs
the ARB because i don't like open diffs
and thats not even getting into the 5 on 5.5 rotors and 1/2 ton brakes. or rebuilding the king pin's and the behind the axle steering arms.
but i'm still going to do it, just going to take more time and green backs to do it.
thanks for asking.
