: Toybox Install...cross member question?

Ok guys,

Getting ready to build up and install my toybox this week:-) :-)

I am running 2f/h42/toybox/3spdcase..... I know that the crossmember needs to be cut off in order to fit this package...the question is what do you do to replace it? I plan on putting a "crossmember" in under the toybox section of the drive line but didn't know if this would be sufficent. I am thinking 1x1x1/8 wall kind of in a big H pattern..were the "-" in the H would be a 1/4in plate with the mini truck transfer case mount would go. Then the ends i would weld parts across the top and bottom of the H and bolt those to L brackets welded to the frame.

if i was to add a welded in crossmember i was thinking of doing something similar to stock but move it back. My buddy with tube bender could bend up a couple pieces of tube that would work. Then weld that in...along with the "toybox" cross member for supporting the drivetrain...

What did you guys do when you put your toyboxes in?

Thanks for the input...

I have searched...just didn't see anything about guys cutting out there old cross member and replacing it with a weld in piece...maybe i will ask Marlin tomorrow also...:D:D

I had cut the stock crossmember off long ago and made a bolt on one, moved back for the sm420 swap. The toybox needed additional support using the mini tcase mount (from the dealer). I fabbed a flat skid plate that wraps around the frame rails and bolts thru them, then bolted the mini mount to the skid plate.

Stew -

I'd like to see one of those go together...need a hand? You'll have to do some floor clearancing, no? Or did the salt take care of that? :D

We made a new bolt on crossmember and used the mini truck mount.

i just used some 2x3 rectangular tubing with a mini truck mount to support the toybox part. I am going to use some 2in. tubing bent up like the old cut out crossmember and either weld or bolt it in behind the t-case going above the driveshaft. :flipoff2:

I sawzall'd mine close to the frame. Then took some 1/4 plate and fitted it back into the frame behind my e-brake. It worked out because that is where my traction bar is welded to.

I am deffinitly leaning towards putting in a welded up crossmember in a similar position to the brake drum but moved back to take into account the toybox. I was wondering were to mount a track bar and so now i know for sure.

Thanks a bunch guys...

now i just need to wait for parts..cause UPS fawkers ripped open my marlin box and lost some of my parts...Marlin was cool and is shipping out all the stuff that was lost. Props to Marlin and his crew! And they did it ASAP at like 8:00am this morning for me!!

Sean,

Did see your thread and have all your pictures saved on my hard drive. I was wondering more what was done about replacing the OLD cross member that was welded in...

Stew,

I just cut the old one out and use the tcase support under the ToyBox as the new crossmember! I may still fab up some sort of other crossmember for the trac bar later, if I have to!

I think you will need a track bar for sure. I have FJ55 rear springs too and could not head up steep hills without some very noisy driveshaft bind, and that was not even giving it much gas. I already need to replace a spring cause it is "s" shaped and I have only got about 1100 miles on the truck wiht Very little wheeling...

Oh, I know I'll need the trac bar, just not sure if I'll need the "other" crossmember!!;)

Brett,

I found a plate with some numbers and letters on it last week in my garage. I think you have a matching one!! I'll send it to you when I get home from the trip!! I also found a short radiator support rod if you still one of those!! ;D
