I have a 1984 CJ7. It has the 6 cyl motor and is carbed. I just put a Champion Rebuilt carb on it and now it does not run. Ive been told that they should be adjusted already from the factory but everytime i turn it over the engine idles very low and rough and shuts off after 5 seconds. After it shuts off you can smell gas. Has anyone had any problems like mine when you put a rebuilt carburetor on? Any help would be great! THNX

I would check the float. It sound like it is stuck down or misadjusted. This would make it not meter the gas supply causing your engine to flood at idle. Just pop the top of the carb off and take a look. Where and how to adjust it/them will be according to driving style and fuel pump volume, but I like to make them shut off the gas as low as possible, but still keep the engine fed under acceleration. I use an electric fuel pump to help this out due to its greater volume output.
In case you didn't know, the adjustment is made by repositioning the tab on the hinge of the float that holds the end of the needle valve. Up shuts it off sooner, down lets it fill more before it shuts off the gas. If the float moves freely, I would suggest binding the tab up a bit. Give it a couple of tries and it should run fine.
By the way, before somebody else beats me to it, this should be in the newbie section.:D
Sounds like the choke to me:cool:
