Had this in General 4x4 tech but no one responded.

I am just curious if this is a good idea to replace the roller bearings in the unimog CV with (oil impregnated bronze) bushings.

Here is bgreen thread on how to upgrade the 60 joints and shafts

Here are a few pictures located in a couple threads for a better reference.

I think would be a much cheaper and easier route to go than the stock MB prices for rebuild kits.

good idea.

just ad grease fittings to cups:p

had this similar idea to my broken mog cv when my d44 ctm cups arrived.

actually it was you post and a few others that made me think about it.

Where are you getting your replacement parts from? I need a CV and inner shaft for sure maybe even an outer. I should know for sure what exactly I will need in the next couple of days.

I think the brass would last as long or longer than the needle bearings. The only issue I see it getting the brass out of the caps if you need to replace them?

Which do you think would generate more heat?

Bushings or roller bearings?

I know in the tranny on a Unimog that there are bushings that fail due to high heat from lack of lube. But I think the roller bearings stay cool??

Lemme know what you think?

CV's should see minimal speed since when you're at high speed your wheels are normally pointed straight (no spinning of the bearings). It's been done in CTMs, and is fine w/ regular greasing.

Sapper, I don't see why it wouldn't be a good idea... If you want/need to do it, I would think it would be fine.

how many people run full time hubs with a street driven ctm'd axle??

A lot of people with TJs and D44s, running aftermarket stubs & CTMs work just fine. True, non-disconnect is a little more severe, but provide they're regularly greased, I would think there would be very little speed on these to cause an issue...

Personally, I had all the parts I needed for my 404s, and don't see a benefit if you do have all the parts already (and don't need a rebuild). I don't think their is a design flaw in the Mog CVs justifying it, but if there are real savings when you add how many you might need to rebuild, then I think they would be ok. Worst case, run for a little while, and take 'em apart and see what you got going...

You're right.

Really, these CV's are pretty strong as-is, and I have yet to see a failure that could have been avoided had there been bushings in the CV. Other things seem to break before the CV (as a general rule).

I don't see why not.

I wouldn't spend too much on it for the reason that the CV doesn't seem to be the weak link in this axle...

Machine shop guys makes almost everything if you can get a sample for them or make good drawings. Actually it comes cheaper to make them than order brand new from Mercedes. And when you make them they can be modified if there is need fro that. Place here in Finland is making really quality shafts. Better than the originals. He makes shafts to Drag Racers off roaders etc. So I say get a sample shaft and find a good small machine shop who can make those parts for ya.
