I did! But I saw it for the 1st time a week ago, very good info. I used a center type bender for my cage and it pretty much sucked doing it. I can wait for my new bender to show up:D

Not only did see it, I actually bent some tubes after reading it with the help of a friend who's got some experience (and a bender). He's pretty dang good, but he found it to be really helpful too.

We made some kickers that went from the main hoop to the front hoop, and then a subframe that spanned my floor for the seats to mount on. It came out pretty cool.

I'm seriously thinking about getting the JD2 bender so I was very interested in this article.

There were two things in the article that I didn't see mentioned though...

Just how much room should you leave around one of these benders to make useful Jeep/Sam roll cages and such? Are we talking about 6 feet radius around the base? 10 feet? More?

A complete cage for a LWB (my fetish) would be about 9'-10' long but would probably be composed of at least three hoops so it would be components of 3'-4' at most. But if the foot well tube went up to the top of the windsheild, along the top to the middle soft top support and then down to the back of the rear tub that would be one looong peice. Maybe you've encountered working with something this size with the SCCA type cages you've been making?

Also, I didn't see anything about bending the same peice of tube in more than one plane (e.g. the hoop from the foot well to the top of the windsheild). Is there much of a different technique to this? Maybe wrt keeping the work peice supported while making the second set of bends in the other plane?

Just to be clear, I don't mean bending in two different planes at the same location on the tube - I'm guessing these benders aren't capable of that.

Any insights?

T!

I missed it too. Thanks for the heads up Evan. Bender's info will come in handy when I get one of those fancy tubing benders. I need to throw this POS pipe bender I have out in the trash.

BTW, I posted this message for you Evan..... No. 100 ;)

Leave ALOT of room..... If you have a driveway or a porch that is where you want it!!... When it was in my Garage I had 8' and it suck'd! I was have'n to unbolt it and spin it on the lags to have enuff room for some bends....

2-3-4 plane bends??? It's called "BEND'N 101"....
If you have never bent tube, stick with single plane bends... By going daul plane you have just increased the difficulty by 50 times..

LEARN TO CRAWL BEFORE YOU RUN......:bender:

Thanks for the good words....

BUT, Remember!!! IT IS NOT EASY!!!! Don't fool yourself.... Unless you are very good in the shop, you'll just be blow'n $$$, and get VERY frustrated....IMHO...

Good look'n Zuk!......
I'm not try'n to be an ass, I just don't want anyone to run out and buy a bender think'n that it's EASY....
You'll be about a K less in the wallet (bender and tube) so it's not cheap aslo...

I guess I'm say'n, take a long hard look before jumping into anything, and good luck....:D

The hoops over the tunnel are 1.0 round, the seat frames are 1.0 square, the kickers are 1.5

When???? Man that is THE question. Basically as soon as I get this POS done. I'm gettin' close. Cooling, ps, driveshafts and all of the little stuff are all that is left. Hopefully 1.5 to 2 months.

My wife is prego (#3:eek: I need and Excursion), so major shop time isnt her current priority:D Its all about the nesting!
