I think you just put the top plate from a flor shift 3 speed tranny I have one you can have for $25 shifter included.

Yep, get the floor shift kit for them. I found a couple at swap meets for cheap. Hell, I have one that will soon be pulled if your interested in it.

not to hijack, but mud guppie I've got a column shift and tranny (rebuilt) if you're interested. I just swapped in a 420 so I don't need it. Im in Northern Cal.

After looking around for the same conversion (column to floor) I agree that the best deals can be found at swap meets. Hell, $25 for the top plate and shifter is a very good price.

I would like to jump in line behind sadler5000 for a floor conversion set up. Three on the tree is a little bit of a pain for wheeling.

will the 4spd stick drop in a 3speed floor shift? If not someone keep me in mind for a stick only. Have the rest of the conversion pieces. No hurry, heading to Texas shortly. (Monday)
Gonna try to run my column shift for a while but it might get a bit "interesting" not sure..

conversion is pretty easy. You need to remove the trans hump and cut a hole for the floor shifter. Put trans in neutral. take off the bolts holding the top plate 6-8 IIRC, and old linkage from the column. Then install the new top plate with the floor shifter, Use some gasket maker and get a new gasket to keep the water out. install the same bolts.

Hardest part is removing all the column linkage and properly cutting the hole in the trans hump.

the swap is very easy to do
I'm not a fan of the 3 on the tree but I would like to go back to stock on my FJ45. Wheeling isn't a problem because I have a toyed out FJ40 on 37's and my pickup will only see mild wheeling or gravel at most.
Wheeling with 3 on the tree would be kind of strange I think

Iron Giant-
I'll be coming down to the Rubicon in June hopefully, maybe I can meet up with you then. Do you need anything from up here??

Why are you going to the floor. Column shift is kick ass, you will regreat moving it.

Unless you ever plan on putting in an SM420, in which case you'll need a floor shifter and the one for the 3 speed just happens to work...

Iron Giant, if you want to go back to 3 on the tree, I think I still have all the levers and linkage from a 68 FJ 40. Kind of greasy. 6 pack and the ride and its yours.

Thanks for the offer Zetasig but I'm actually offering mine up as well. Just switched to sm 420. So I too have a rebuilt column shift and tranny to part with. ;)
