: My new tow rig? Maybe!
Paul Gagnon 01-05-2002, 09:03 PM I was out looking at some used trucks today. I found a few really nice ones and a couple were pretty reasonably priced. The last place I stopped had something interesting though (and cheap too :)). I like cheap, because I am. ;)
Truck: 1982 Chevy 3/4 ton regular cab, regular box, 6.2L diesel, automatic and it has a power tailgate.
Price: $1000
I think I'm going to buy it. As long as it runs I can't go wrong.
Paul, tell me that you WILL put a turbo on that thing............ Also a Ford grille (to save face....):D :D

I'd like to put a turbo on it but I'm trying to do this cheap so who knows.
I'd hate to disgrace a perfectly good Ford grille by putting a Chevy truck behind it. :cow:
pcorssmit 01-06-2002, 01:54 PM I'd rather tow with a 350 than a 6.2 NA.
Pete
A lot of people will bag on the 6.2 - but SCREW THEM ALL!
This sounds like a good low price tow rig, and the price is definately right :)
Chief yelling alot 01-06-2002, 03:26 PM One question Paul
What are you goint to tow:question:
NE-RokToy 01-06-2002, 04:27 PM Gotta say its a good deal. But whatever you do don't try to polish a turd! run the motor as is or swap in a 350. But for that price you really can't go wrong
brutus 01-06-2002, 04:40 PM cool

That's what I figure. If the 6.2 dies it goes on a scrap pile and in goes a 350. It has a solid body (a little rough but not bad) and a good frame. I can probably get $400 or so for the power tailgate. Bargain basement prices for a discount tow rig. :D
Oh yeah, I'm going to pull the injectors and take them to the local diesel injection service place. I think thye charge $20 a piece to clean them but I haven't been there in a few years so it might be a little more now.
pcorssmit 01-07-2002, 10:32 AM Sounds like a good deal. Just something to think about, a running 6.2 will fetch decent money, I sold mine for $350 when I did the TBI conversion, it burned more oil than fuel and sold immediatly, sure I could've gotten more out of it. Just saying if you plan to swap it out at some point, don't go blowing a hole in the side of the block first.
Pete
ironpig70 01-07-2002, 01:42 PM sweet rig what is the tranny on that thing? my dad has an 88-89 or there abouts with the sm465 low geared s.o.b. but tows like a mutha.great price for $1000 can't beat it.:D
Paul Gagnon 01-07-2002, 07:31 PM Apparently the truck was the shop truck for a tranny rebuilder who traded it in two months ago on a newer truck. From looking under the hood it has been well maintained. The dash pad is trashed and the seat is pretty bad but those are minor details. I went to hear it run today but the batteries weren't charged. The guy told me that he will have the batteries charged and I can hear it run tomorrow.
Paul Gagnon 01-08-2002, 05:38 PM I test drove the truck today. It runs pretty good, has a small exhaust leak somewhere though. It's been a long time since I drove one of these 6.2L trucks I forgot how gutless they are. The tranny shifts very crisply and the ride is not too bad for a 20 year old truck. I gave the guy a $30 deposit and I'll pick it up on Saturday. :D:D:D

Jeepskickass 01-17-2002, 08:37 PM Congrats, Paul. Killer deal. Sure is nice to not have to worry about breaking your 'wheeler. So is it going to make the trek to TDS, or are you going to drive the Exploder?

Hell yeah!!! :bounce2::bounce2::bounce2: I talked to a friend the other day and he is going to lend me his camper. :cool2: I need to get a trailer hitch, do a complete fluid change and clean the injectors. Now that I got the seat moving properly in it's track I don't need to buy one. Still need a dashpad and some tunes for the long drive are definately in order. :D Oh yeah, need to get a trailer too. ;) WOOO HOOO!!! I'm a trailer queen baybee! :smokin: :smokin: :smokin:
You are gonna remove that lift gate, right? Drop quite a but of weight ritht there.. and less weight means better pulling :p

I don't know about that. I was thinking that it might come in handy for picking up parts and stuff.

If you want to pick up parts, get a bed mounted lift boom... it weighs less, and is more useful IMHO....
Paul Gagnon 01-17-2002, 10:05 PM For picking up parts a boom would be fine but it's the "and stuff" that this power tailgate might be particularly useful for. ;)
