I smoked one from towing :emb4: and it did not break the case just heated the oil untill it got soo hot it ran out like water and was leaving a smoke cloud. It got hot enough to melt the spedo gear and turn the main shaft blue.

Seems like almost any tcase should react this way, unless the driveline is disconnected. Is there somethign different in the design of the 300. Oil should still be getting on the gears, just as if it was being driven. Was it being towed in 2hi or N?

That looks a lot more fun than simply discoing the rear driveshaft!!

I'll have to try that. :D
NOT.

how do you tow in 2 hi?
then the mainshaft in the tranny will spin with no oil

I don't know how it happened, I picked up the case for spare parts...I'm kinda afraid to open it up!

:nuke: I have seen mods for the Dana 300 where material is welded to the gears to splash the oil while towing. I think I would just disconnect the shaft if it were me.

That's what I was hinting at

Just engage the front hubs so the oil will sling around, with just the rear spining, the rear bearing is dry and will burn up.

For years I've flat towed my CJ with a 300. For 6 or 7 hours and up to 75 mph at a time. And I have had no problems.

But know I hear about maybe there is a problem, and now you all have me dropping the driveline.

I have heard of folks smoking the T/C. But that was while towing in low range.:D

Tri County Gear sells the sliders with the paddles for towing.

When I first flat towed my ford, the 14 bolt (4.88s) would get REALLY hot(70-80 0n freeway).Got 2 axles and cut them off to about 6 inches total length. Pop off good axles throw in "stubs" and nothing is turning in drivetrain. When you get where your going you can lock hubs to move truck around if need be,then throw axles back in rear and go. Works great.:) :smokin:

WOW that looks familar It was my Dana 300. I was flat towing to Big Bear a few months ago When we hit Victorville and ka pow she let loose. Everything was out of gear the hubs were unlocked. Being new to the Dana 300 I took the advise of my buddies who had towed cross country with a Dana 300 that did not have any mods done to it. But anyway a cheap lesson learned DISCONNECT the driveshaft. But OH WELL Enjoy the parts. Doug

you do not have to disconnect the drive shafts as long as you stop ever 2 hours or so and start the jeep up and run it.
