: FE Starter Question . . .

OK big BB Ford guys, here's the problem/question. My son's '69 F-100 4X4 with a 360 just ate another starter. The teeth on the pinion appear to have worn out . . . The starter was replaced about 8 months ago, same problem.

Flywheel teeth appear OK and the starter mounts up square to bellhousing. I don't recall running across this problem before but I haven't messed with an FE motor for at least 30 years.

Anyone got any rational ideas what's causing this?

just to make sure, have you checked the ring gear teeth ALL the way around. any significant damage to a few of the ring gear teeth will take out the pinion gear over time.

I'm pretty sure I saw the whole ring gear . . . Of course, I was on my back looking thru a 3 inch hole with a flashlight while the kid cranked the engine over with a big breaker bar . . . So I might of missed something.

I guess No. 1 son is going to be pulling some big chunks out of his junk.

check your battery , ive had that problem ,turned out to be a week battery not fully throwin out the bendex and it would grind the starter all to hell .
