from one jeep owner too the other i find that the mopar system may be a little more expensive but well worth the price. my husband did alot of research before choosing. in one weekend he had it all put together. if you go with the rebuilt carb you will continue to have the dying out problem at steep angels (we tried this first), the v-8 is too much power, you need tork not gas petal power that is how you brake things. now if you want to tear apart your engine and put in the engine of a diffrent jeep hey go ahead but remember it will not be original and may be harder to smog than the mopar. its all done for you. we have had nothing but good things happen with ours. it made a huge diffrence !!!!!! check out www.kollerdodge.com they had the lowest price on Mopar EFI. KRB...85 CJ7,springover,Currie 9"Detroit rear,Dana 30 Ox Track Warn axle front,Mopar EFI,33 BFG's,Dual Optimas.

All that kit is is parts directly off of a 92-93 Wrangler, you could of got a complete 4.0 or just the head and injection for alot less and had a better cylinder head design. i'm glad you guys are happy with the kit, but for anyone else out there I would really look into doing the swap yourself. It will be a little more work but ALOT cheaper then the Mopar kit and get MORE power then the kit.

Does anyone know if I do my own conversion w/o the kit and still be able to pass smog in CA?

That's the problem in Kali. NE toy didn't take that into account.
The kit comes with the "EO#" and stickers. If you do it any
other way, such as putting in a whole 4.0 HO motor or just
all the parts, including the wiring and computer, you'll have to
take it to a referee station and go through that hassle. I put
the kit on mine and I'm very happy with it.

If you value the lack of trouble that much go right ahead. Personally I like to save money where I can and will gladly spend extra weekends doing the work and going through the "hassle" to save $500-1000 (the mopar kit is $2000 isnt it?) and get a newer cylinder head design! I guess it boils down to do it yourself or bolt on. I'm a do it yourselfer

I'm with krb.
The gang of cheapskates out there will always advise "get a used 4.0". BUT, that is just that. A used engine, and a lot of folks are looking for a fresh AND stonger build.
I say buy that used 1991+ 40.L HO engine, rebuild yer old 4.2 block then rework the 4.0 head add the OEM FI or MPI and then you will have something a LOT better.
So, all you swap guys can keep saying what you've been saying.
But leave open or suggest the option for folks you 'advise' to use the longer stroke 4.2 short block and even a stroker created from a 4.0 using their old 4.2 crank and con rods.
I'm getting sick of that old "go 350 or 5.0 and no substitue for CI" standard answer.
Building up a 6 is just as expensive but a lot of local ARCA guys admire my hot and strong 6 (ask Lance or H8).
Some others will even admit this is really can be the most practical and benificial thing you can do to turn that Jeep into a crawling muscle rig.
Now go ahead and flame if you want ... I've heard it all anyway ...

Thanks guys. The kit is too much. I think I’ll try to find a decent 4.0 and do a head swap and EFI conversion myself and prepare to do battle with the Smog Ref.
Either that or I’ll just sell the 87YJ and get a pre73 Bronco so I won’t have to deal with the smog boys every two years.
