: Wider is better?

I'm sorry that you guys even have to read this, but I have to ask. Full width axles on my EB or leave the EB width axles. It's not a strength issue, just a width issue, because I would replace the 44 and the 9 inch with a 44 and a 9 inch out of a 79 bronco. I already have the parts just wondering if I should do it??

Although mine is not an EB, the dimensions are about the same. I love the wider width...http://members.directvinternet.com/~reecer/front2.jpg

If you're building it for the trail, I say do it. Or if you are like me and drive it 90% on the road but build it for the trail anyway, I say do it.

This is the wheeler. Maybe you guys have seen me crying that my bronco doesn't drive straight. Well thats a different one (yes I have two, and just about ready to get divorced, I have 5 lifted 4 by's in all not counting her car). Back to the subject at hand, some say it won't fit down some trails, and that you can't run over everything, but I saw Twisted Scout fit through the same trails as a flatty around here. I'm sure that you can't fit down everything, but if you could there would be no challenge. I just think that the added stability would more than pay off. BTW, this one (I'm talking about the 77 EB now) has 5.5 inches of WH on it and 38.5 inch SX's I like the set up, but what clearance or rubbing issues am I going to have. Just want to talk about it before we fire up the plasma cutter.

Fire up the cutter. If you're not shy about shedding your skin (body) then that is the way to go. I see a ton of rigs running full sized axles, rockwells, etc out there. Yeah, you may not be able to squeeze through a couple of spots. Then go over them. If you can't go over it, go home and build it up some more. If you finally can't go over it, go around it.

You'll have a rig that is way stable, original and just bad assed all around! If I ever decide to go to dual 60's they're staying wide. What's that? Less expensive and better off-road handling? Oh yeah!

Post some pics when you're done!

I'm not even a little scared to hack up the body, who cares it's just there to sit in. You guy's are getting me excited, doesn't anyone have anything bad to say? Like those axles are to small, or those tires are to big, or the bronco is to orange, or something like that. Let's here both sides of the story fellas

IMO, i prefer the stock width but it's just a personal preference. I'm able to squeeze between the trees and it's pretty stable in the off-camber stuff. However, I've been on many runs with rigs running full-size and they also work very well. They just have to take different lines. I comes down the the type of trails you runs. Build your EB to suit the trails you use most often.

61" does seem to be a good compromise:)

:D, that one reason i am going with new backspacing on my wheels with the 38's i should trac just about 2-3 inchs wider, i just want to have my tires bounce off rocks then my body

I don't plan on running stock axle shafts, I want to run Warn shafts and CTM joints, still think it will kill the axle?

Wider is better except for the cliffhanger trails like black bear in CO....

Arent the Radius arm mounts on that 79 bronco axle cast into the axle housing? You cant move them. Wont he have to find another axle that has them welded on?

No- they're bolted on! The "ears" that the C bushings mount around ARE part of the axle and they MAY need to be moved depending on his application.

I don't think I know what you are referring to as the bolted on part. The only things bolted on the 79 axle housing is the radius arms themselves, and the trackbar.
Yes, the ears, where the radius arm mounts, are cast; at least the ones on my '79 are. Most people who run full-width from 78-79 just move the coil towers out to match the radius arms. Also, because they are cast into the housing and are HOLLOW, they cannot be moved without some serious "engineering."

I am running leafs in the front, so I just cut my perch to fit the contours of the ears and welded them up.
