a buddy of mine has a 97 ranger with the 4L. the transfer case motor sucks and wont put it in 4wd. is there anyone out there that makes a lever kit for this transfer case? right now we just took the motor off and are putting it in and out of 4wd by hand. but this isnt a final fix for this. if you can help us out please do, thanks.

no there is not a "swap kit".. you can however source a manual t case and swap it all over.
more than likely though all you need to do is clean the motor. no biggie.
here's a step by step (http://www.therangerstation.com/TCaseshiftmotor.htm)

I overhauled one of those motors myself and it's been working fine for a little while now. They put a really pathetic amount of grease in those things and what little crappy grease is there gets hard and old and clogs up the gears. I redid it with a more generous application of a good lithium-base wheelbearing grease.
No doubt a real shift lever is much better. Unfortunately this was a "delete" option after '90 or so and this makes finding a manual one difficult.
If one were to make a manual shifter for it, it'd have to probably be a pulley & cable setup, as that shaft rotates about 270* or so.
The actual manual cases have a totally different shifter setup.

What about getting rid of the electric motor can and putting a flex shaft to the part that bolts to the tranny? Then, run the flex shaft into the truck with a knob or crank on top (with some sort of pointer to tell you which range it is in). Seems pretty simple... If the new (used) motor I found doesn't work that's exactly what I am going to do...
