Getting ready to pick up my rear axle and I want to help it hold up a little better. 35 spline? I will be spooling it.

I never thought a 60 need much help but If you do go SF then the larger axles do beef the whole thing because they are less likely to flex if you do go FF then the mid 70's up seem to have the .375 wall tubes not the .313. Someone on here might have more info on wall thickness.

It is a ff ; mid 70's vhev van. Waiting on the rest of the spec's. Tried a search on going to 35 spline, but it was too short. Do you just get a 35 spline spool and shafts?

yep but you will have to bore the spindles or get a set off of a dana 61 or 70 or so on and replace the ones you have now unless it was a factory 35 spline axle to start with:D

I think you may mean a early 70's van because i am almost sure they started using 14 bolts in the mid 70's.

Also some of the early 60's of that time had 16 spline shafts that are similar in size to the newer30 spline shafts. But from what i have read you can have the inner spindle diamiter machined down so that you can fit 35 spliners in there. I think 66cjdean knows a bit about machining that out.

Thats what I needed thanks. I was using that mid 70's term loosely(70-79). It is a 30 spline. I just didnt want to swap in a 60 for just the ring gear diameter increase.:)

Well, you could do something to your rear D60 housing that is similar to this front D60 housing.

Most 60 spindles have plenty of room if you need to bore them out for 35 spline. Here is a shot of one I did and bored it out to 1.600"

the only thing i would look into would be 35spline shafts. i like the clearance of a dana60 but i personally would start with a 14bolt or dana70. you start out with 1 1/2" shafts. i run a c&c 14bolt now and just picked up a second yesterday (an man did i jack my back up in the process). anyway i will use the second to cut the bottom out of the housing and "shave" it. i will also have the ring gear turned down about a 1/2" and i will gain 1 1/4" of clearance over a stock 14bolt. just taking a grinder tyo the bottome of the pigs works well to help in the clearance dept. too. just not as much as cutting the bottom of the housing out. :D

I thought I read that many of the F250 heavy duty trucks came with FF Dana60's, with 30 spline shafts, but with the big 1.6" ID spindles. Then all you need are the shafts and a spool, correct?
