Take the locker apart. Put the side gear in a press and that should get it out.

Weld a chain to the end of the shaft and pull it out with another truck :flipoff2:

Get a new axle and start from scratch.

Rover axles suck. Call Bill Davis he is the "expert" LOL

Detroits have either a plate or a pin between the shafts. So a big rod will only beat on and eventually tear up the locker. Try using a smaller bar. 1/4" or less in diameter. You might get through the cracks. Otherwise trying to weld somehting to pull the shaft may be your only bet.

Hmm, I just had a really good idea for and automatic shaft removal tool. Ahhh the possibilities

Sounds like the best way. If it wasn't obvious, you should remove the spindle/hub assembly from the axle casing to avoid fawking up the spindle.

If it isn't in there really bad, you might then be able to pull directly. If not, make up a slide hammer and weld to the end of the shaft.

Just out of curiosity, what axles are these???

I was able to use a crapsman magnet to pull both of my broken axles out.

Is it the short side or the long side? I take it you really can't get access to the 18" since it is in the axle tube? Might make it difficult to weld something to it.

Did you try and post this in the Gen 4X4? Surely this isn't the first time this has been encountered.

stock 24 spline long side, cant weld anything to it.

cutting apart the housing is not something i want to do

First try a really strong magnet. I believe Craftsman/Mac both make a telescoping 25 lb magnet that is very powerfull. But if it's really stuck I've seen my buddy do this...Take some welding rod and wrap everything but the two ends a couple of times with electical tape. Slide it in so it touches the shaft. Now grab a battery and jumper cables. Ground the axle housing and tap the positive end to the welding rod. If all went well the rod should have welded itself to the shaft and you can just pull out the rod. If you dont have welding rod you can slide some thin pvc tube into the housing and shoot your mig wire in till it touches the axle. Let us know when u get it out.:flipoff2:

Do you mean it is so far in that with the spindle assembly unbolted from the axles casing, you can't get at it???

18" long should be enough to get at it. As long as it is within say 4" of the casing flange, a weld should be possible.

Cut the rear cover off the housing (sewercap it afterwards) and blue wrench the axleshaft near the diff...

The cover's a weak POS anyways, not much of a loss.

Isn't this like Bobby Fisher getting his Rook stuck in his ass in some freakish feltching incident?
