I just got one of these from the local GM dealer
p# 0867 2160 in ACDelco wrapper
their computer showed only 2 in Canada and none showed in the US

so where does one get this gasket in the aftermarket?

as the adapter does not have a deep enough relief for the bearing snap rings the gasket is required to mate the adapter properly

I just got a pair of these gaskets from the GM dealer about a month ago. They had both of them in stock in fact. I will say it was the only dealer in the area that had any and this particular dealer is a distribution center of sorts for all the dealerships in the area, so they have tons of parts including the oddball stuff.

Every parts house should have one! It comes in a roll. For the 10 bucks they get for one damn gasket I started buying the gasket material and making my own.

That's what I do most of the times.
When I find the gasket I need for $5 or under I get it, but when it starts in $10 and up and it has to be ordered or doesn't exist, I just make mine. :D

if anyone has a used, stock GM, sm465 tailhousing gasket, I would appreciate the compressed thickness measurement from it

big83chevy4x4 what brand name are the gaskets that you can source?

thanks

not sure on the brand but they have a transtar sticker on them, and they supply GM

I can get them from Victor, (Dana) but not individually, only as a part of a whole kit which will likely include the PTO cover and top cover gasket as well, but I can't say with 100 percent certainty as I've never ordered one for an SM 465.

Total cost is about $20 though.

don't want to sound like an ass, but I use the old busch light method. Take the center divider from a 30 pack or the side of the case and a ball peen hammer (preferably small) and start tapping away. it works. put silicone on the slick side, and leave that cardbord side open. it seals right up. don't have leaks. you guys are too worried about what should be there instead of what will work really well there.

That's how I cut my gasket but I do use Gasket material.
It's cheap enough where I am not going broke but still have a real gasket.

well all your gasket ideas are fine, but for this particular application, a certain thickness gasket MUST be used, the way gm made the surfaces required the use of the correct thickness gasket to set bearing preload. also too thin a gasket will cause early wear on things because things will not be seated properly. ive seen outputs inputs and that collar wear till the splines were sharp due to the lack of a proper gasket

I am not trying to make a single gasket
I am trying to source lots of them (dozens)
I would be using the neoprene sheet gasket material if I was only trying to do one

thanks for replies

I do not think the 465 side of the adapter is as crucial as the 205 side
chances are you will have a homebrew gasket that is too thin
the 2 snap rings will most likely keep the adapter fairly square, good luck sealing it

but on the 205 side you will definitely be fawking up your shafts by running an incorrect gasket
there is only a snap ring on the top end of the adapter so you will definitely be forcing the transfer case to run at an angle
which makes the coupler eat the 465 output splines as well

the stock gaskets are at least head gasket thick

I actually had one original gasket and got the same thickness gasket material and made a few because I couldn't find anymore, and I do have multiple vehicles all using the same setup.

I know thickness is crucial that is why I don't like using silicone on every surface.
I use gaskets, and some times smear a thin layer of silicone on some surfaces that could use it, and sometimes use the type 1B

I, for one, hate scrapping silicone
the local parts house made me buy a dozen d60 cover gaskets before they would bring them in
so I guess I am in the minority

I used to pick these up at the local tranny shop...They had them hanging on the wall.
