: Aux tank for a 55
rogueturtle 01-06-2002, 08:45 PM Do the aftermarket 60 aux tanks fit a 55 or is this a job for super-fabricator man?
What are other 55ers doing for aux fuel tanks besides stopping to fill them up all the time?
;)
And when your mechanical fuel pump starts to crap out from the tank bits---does it give you a warning or chug--chug----stall. game over.
Charles Aarons 01-06-2002, 10:01 PM MAF has a good selection of undoubtedly overpriced fuel tanks made by Long Ranger in Australia, a top tank outfit. They have a 49 gal FJ55 replacement tank. Stock tank is 21.7 US gal.

rogueturtle 01-07-2002, 02:54 AM Thx Charles, i think those are the same as the JT OUTFITTERS Tanks that run 49 gallons at around $20bucks per gallon.....ouch.
Forget supporting Australia and Long Ranger.. i think i need some recommendations of some good ol American custom tankbuilders. ;)
DanKunz 01-07-2002, 08:35 AM I have a ford box van tank in my 55. Right at 24 gallons.
Fits nicely under there, but I did't do it. PO did some creative frame relocations to get it to fit. Still a good fit, and seems very strong still when I wheel it.
I got 17-20mpg with my 55 with 31s on it.
I get 12-15 now with my 33 TSLs.
rogueturtle 01-07-2002, 12:13 PM creative frame relo????? what did he move????
The area is huge if you remove the current tank bar.
It will easily fit 31x33 x 7(rear) and 12(pumpkin side) which works out to roughly 44gallons. How come 24is so hard to fit?
The 7 and 12 inch heights btw are a good 2 inches above the bumper height and the pumpkin bottom respectively.
If im designing one that is wheelin safe- do i want to stay above the center of the axle???? And what would be a good thickness for the bottom of the tank that would at least dent versus gouge a hole and leave me stranded.
DanKunz 01-07-2002, 12:39 PM who knows why they did what they did.
Most likely they got a cheap box van tank and used the ol red wrench to make it fit.
The rear frame is widened to allow for the geometry of the tank.
odd, but oh well =)
Some day I will go for a bigger aftermarket, but I get by just fine with what I have now (I live within 3 hours of all the wheeling spots I frequent)
rogueturtle 01-07-2002, 01:08 PM Does anyone know whats inside the EVP tank? I got this crazy idea that it could be used to hold an extra 5 gallons with some simple reconnecting of two hoses to the gas tank?
55 guy 01-07-2002, 06:29 PM I just put a nother 55 tank below the stock one , pushed stock one up a little , fit right in , just need to hook lines up !!!!

You just put another tank in??? How did you mount it, and how far down did it hang? Any pics? I have yet to see what kind of mileage I get, and how often I need to fill up, so I am intrigued by all of this 55 tank talk.

rogueturtle 01-08-2002, 10:04 AM the best would be to run them as two separate tanks if you could figure out the fill situation for the new tank. That way if you punctured the lower tank on a rock you would be able to switch to the aux tank above it.
55 guy 01-08-2002, 06:59 PM well guys < maybe IT was not that easy ,did this years ago , what I did was weld or bolt a peice of channel across the frame behind the shock mounts , turned tank so filler neck is now faceing rear bumper , use lip on tank & bolt in , & yes I use a electric fule pump to fill the top tank from the bottom tank !!! IT"S the poor man way !!!IF you have a extra tank !
see ya 55 guy

Screwzer 01-08-2002, 09:56 PM Damn! And I had to go cutting up that extra tank I had, just to see what was inside (a bunch of lines and baffles). So how did you fill the lower tank? Did you put a "Y" in the main hose?
So how you doin' any way? Haven't seen ya since Pig-O-Thon.
55 guy 01-09-2002, 06:35 PM I fill each tank seperately ,, I"M working on my sons 40 , soa almost done !!!
