: Dumb Axle Question

Can't figure out the search terms to use to get this question answered, so...

I bought a D44 front and then decided that I'd rather have a 60, but for clearance and driveshaft measurement purposes it should be fine to hold the Jeep up while I get the cash together for a 60. It doesn't have gears in it right now, and I don't see any point in installing gears if I don't need them. If I find a used pinion so the pinion end of the pig is closed up, install a carrier with spiders but no ring, and fill it with oil will it be reasonably safe for driving on the street (again, just for testing purposes until I get the cash for the 60)?

I figure I might as well use it if I've got it... then maybe I can sell it once I have the 60 and recoup some of my cost...

Yeah it would be fine, You don't need to fill it with oil either. As long as you don't lock the hubs or engage the front it will be fine.
You have disconneting hubs right? If you have the auto disconnecting then you need oil.

Yeah, should be fine. I'm actually driving around on a d-30 with 4.10's and an 8.8 with 4.56's cause I haven't regeared the 30 yet. So long as I dont engage the passanger side axle it'll be OK. By the way, when you're done with the 44 I'll take it off your hands, no charge.:D
