: Anyone else do their own exhaust?
pmurf1 01-06-2002, 09:00 PM Put my Thorley header on last night. God I love 22re engines, so simple it it ought to be illegal.
Thorley gives you an adjustable downpipe that I hacked up to fit my drivetrain lift/crossmember combo with no engine lift blocks. I'm done to the cat in less than an hour and it seems like it'd be easy to just pipe the rest rather than sourcing it out. A muffler shop said about $175 for a Flowmaster 50 series with tubing. It's not that I'm cheap ( I am), but I don't have the time to get the truck down there during the week and I wanna wheel this weekend bad. I can work all night after work in the garage if I have to.
Here's my thinking, I can order a 4' section of 2.25" pipe and a Flowmaster from Summit for about $75 and have it here Wednesday. One night of garage time and I'm back on the road sounding good.
Here's the main question, if I do the catback myself, do I need to use 45's to make the offset I need, or can I just cut the angles I need in the tubing and then weld them back up? I'm sure bending one piece of tube is preferable, but is the flow that critical? Checker also has prebent 45's I think, I could use those to keep the diameter the same throughout the tubing. Any thoughts from the guys who have done it. It's gonna be about a foot long piece of straight tubing coming out of the cat. It goes up at a 45 for about 6" and then another 45 to get into the muffler to keep it off the rocks above the springs. The exit of the muffler will just be a short piece of tube.
miniyota 01-06-2002, 09:10 PM i did mine!
i cut before the catalitic converter. welded in my 2 1/4 muffler and put a down pipe! about 3 welds and no bends. of course it is a non epa aproved unit!
4CrawlR 01-06-2002, 09:23 PM I made my own 4Runner exhaust, 2" from the cat back, put an adapter on the outlet of the cat, straight pipe to the Flowmaster then a length of s/s flex line over the frame and out the side.

pmurf1 01-06-2002, 09:39 PM Thanks for the pics. 4crawler, damn you need some bumpstops! I bent my Chevy's not running bumpstops. You may have them now though.
I'm gonna call Summit tomorrow morning and order the parts. My horseshoe crossmember is removed, so I can put my pipe higher to keep from flattening it on the rocks. I could go straight to the muffler, but I want to keep it up as high as possible.
Don't forget when you run your pipes to try and avoid pointing the end of the exhaust tubing at your shocks or rear axle, the added heat will cause the shock to quickly fade and pointing it at the rear axle will cause the housing to heat up a little warmer than normally would. Not to mention how harmful exhaust gases are to metals, they can deteriorate the lifespans quickly.

Got 'em, there are 4.5" tall bumpstops in there and they are working at that point.
Im4yotas 01-07-2002, 12:47 AM I did my own exhaust. From the headers, straight to the cat, straight to the cherry bomb!Had to make my own turn down to keep the exhaust away from the diff. It is all tucked up there pretty good, though. Just barely past the frame rails, I think. Could link some pics tomorrow if U like.

ROKTOY 01-07-2002, 05:32 AM I have made my own as well. Check around and you can buy mandrel bent curves to do whatever you want. Summit and Jeg's sell them as does S&S Headers in Phoenix.

OOP'S 01-07-2002, 06:10 AM Cut the flange and pipe off the old muffler, welded it to a "Cherry Bomb", welded a "turn down" pointed at about a 45. Welded a bracket to the turndown and I do not give a Damn if it gets smashed. Sounds pretty damn good since I replaced the right exhast manifold and gasket. On another note Toyota has changed the exhast manifold gaskets for the 3.0 they now are 7 layers instead of five and are not prone to leak on the passenger side in the back like the old ones even if the manifold warps, expect to pay about $50.00 from the dealer. Man I am glad I have a Toyota Tech that lives down the street.

3 year old 56" long Alcans.
Oh and they do bend the other way, too:

Total cost was about $40.00 dollars. I'm putting on a header in a few weeks and I'll probably redo the whole thing.
Bones 01-07-2002, 08:34 AM Hey Dan, sent you a PM
Dan_E 01-07-2002, 08:41 AM Thanks for the heads up, I always forget to check those! I'm sending you an email right now. My DSL is all fux0r3d up, so hopefully it should get to you.

Slick 01-07-2002, 02:34 PM When I built mine I bought a couple of mandrel U bends (1 small radius and 1 large radius). I also used a muffler that has the inlet / outlet at opposite corners (as opposed to corner/center). That way I could turn the muffler sideways to get up over the rear axle without using any of the U bend.. Sorry, no pix :(

pmurf1 01-07-2002, 05:03 PM I ordered the 50 Delta Series Flowmaster 2.25" today from Summit. Should be here by Wednesday. Picked up some tubing from Checker, but their 45's look really crappy. Not mandrel bent for smooth flow. Look like a ribbed comdom!
Jay, I'll check out the header place and see if they have the mandrel bent 45's I need. Thanks.

  If it hung any lower, it would be getting rock-rash from speed bumps.

That would last about to the "gatekeeper" on my LB (122") and then it would be in the FB. Why so low, does it help push you through the mud???? :usa:
Toy 4Runner Man 01-07-2002, 07:36 PM I did mine myself twice, the most recent time, off the header, I have the Flowmaster going above the crossmember, and then a 90, and then out where the red dot is! This will soon change, too damm loud.

85toyboy 01-07-2002, 11:32 PM I did it the same way as Dan but with the pipe at the red dot. I'm running a cheap pep boys turbo with the cat converter above the crossmember. Even with the Thorley header its not lowder than my boggers on the road.
Dan_E 01-08-2002, 06:48 AM My exhaust had fallen off in the middle of winter. It was another one of those situations where I really needed a garage badly, but I didn’t have access to one. I’m going to fab up another one when I install the header next month.
Yeah, it hangs a bit low right now. I’ve whacked it pretty good a few times, while going in reverse of all things, it just bent the elbow bend back a bit. It’s pretty cheap tubing, so I bent it right back. I might just have a whole system installed, it depends on how much the header sets me back.
